The 37th Fuerteventura Insular Craft Fair: Celebrating Artisanship in Antigua
This past Thursday, the charming municipality of Antigua welcomed the vibrant launch of the XXXVII Insular Craft Fair of Fuerteventura 2026. Running until Sunday, May 10, this highly anticipated event showcases the exceptional talents of artisans from all over the Canary Islands, uniting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary creativity.
A Grand Opening
The inaugural ceremony was graced by various dignitaries, including Matías Peña, the Mayor of Antigua, Margarita De Vera, spokesperson for the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, Lola García, the President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Lolina Negrín, a regional councilor, and Jonathan Peña, the Councilor for Culture. Together, they participated in the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony that signified the official commencement of this artisan celebration.
Before getting into the talks, Mayor Peña led the audience in a moment of remembrance for Santiago Travieso, a respected figure who recently passed away. The heartfelt tribute resonated with all those present, highlighting the community’s spirit and the tradition of honoring their roots.
The Spirit of Regional Collaboration
During his speech, Mayor Peña underscored the fair’s regional significance, pointing out the efforts made by the Municipality of Antigua to support participating artisans coming from various municipalities and islands. He emphasized that the local government is facilitating accommodations and transportation for these creators, making it easier for them to participate and share their crafts.
Peña also mentioned the significant investment necessary to host the fair, quoting a cost that has already soared to 300,000 euros. He reassured attendees that the municipality is committed to the continuation of this artisanal gathering, “with or without collaboration,” reflecting the government’s determination to sustain and promote local arts and crafts.
Acknowledging Volunteer Contributions
Margarita De Vera, representing the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, also spoke at the opening, shining a light on the essential role of volunteers and the collective efforts of the foundation and the municipality in organizing the event. She took the opportunity to congratulate Bernard Glauser, recipient of the 2026 Insular Craft Award, recognizing his outstanding work as a jeweler.
Broader Support for Artisans
The significance of the craft fair extends beyond mere showcases; it embodies a concerted effort to uphold the traditional artisanal practices of the island. President Lola García welcomed the attendees, characterizing the fair as “more than just a fair.” She emphasized the Cabildo’s continuous support through economic, logistical, and training initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting the island’s rich artisanal heritage.
A Showcase of Craftsmanship
Visitors to the XXXVII Insular Craft Fair can expect an eclectic mix of artisanal displays, hands-on demonstrations, and engaging activities centered around traditional Canary Islands crafts. Over the weekend, there will be opportunities not only to appreciate the diverse range of handmade products but also to deepen their understanding of the techniques and stories that shape each piece.
As the fair unfolds, it promises to be a celebration of creativity, community, and culture, bringing together artisans, locals, and tourists alike in a shared appreciation for the craftsmanship that is an integral part of Fuerteventura’s identity.
