Caring for Feline Friends in Fuerteventura: José Ignacio Torrent’s Mission
In a heartfelt discussion on the program “La Voz de Fuerteventura” via Radio Insular, volunteer José Ignacio Torrent elaborated on an ongoing initiative aimed at caring for stray cats in the area. Representing a non-profit organization, Torrent emphasized the constant need for resources in their mission to aid these vulnerable animals. “We are always in need of help and funding,” he stated, underscoring the challenges faced by the organization as it works tirelessly in parts of Antigua, specifically in Puerto Castillo.
The Colony of Care
Currently, the organization looks after a dedicated colony of approximately 15 to 16 cats residing near the port. These cats are not just left to fend for themselves; they have been sterilized and receive basic, continuous care. Torrent shared, “All of them are sterilized, and we apply treatments to protect them from pests and parasites,” making it clear that these essential services are a priority. The provision of daily food and fresh water in specially designed shelters is an integral part of their care regimen.
Cat Cafés: A Safe Haven
The association has set up structures known as “cat cafés,” designed to provide nourishment and shelter for the street cats. Scattered throughout Puerto Castillo, these cafés are not limited to just one area; they extend to surrounding locales, including the vicinity of the Centro Comercial Atlántico and various hotel zones. Inside these designated areas, dry food and water are regularly replenished, ensuring that the street cats have access to basic necessities.
The Importance of Responsibility
Torrent took a moment to address a pressing concern: these street cats do not simply appear out of nowhere. Their presence is frequently a result of irresponsible pet ownership, where once-loved household pets are abandoned and left to navigate life alone outdoors. Advocating for Spaying and Neutering
The organization strongly advocates for spaying and neutering as a vital strategy in controlling the population of feral cats. “We are very much pro-sterilization. It’s our fight,” Torrent remarked, indicating that this initiative is crucial for both owned pets and those already adapting to life outdoors. Additionally, the organization cares for abandoned litters, actively seeking adoptive homes and promoting adoption whenever feasible.
Community Collaboration
One significant aspect of their mission is the collaboration with local veterinary professionals, whose involvement is invaluable in supporting the efforts to care for these animals. As part of their ongoing initiatives, Torrent extended an invitation to the public to support their efforts. A solidarity breakfast is scheduled for this Sunday at Café Bar El Contraste, located at Avenida Príncipe de España, number 10, in Antigua. This event, running from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, aims to raise funds necessary for feeding, veterinary care, and rescue programs.
The breakfast will feature delicious chocolate with churros, alongside artisan market stalls, all designed to foster community involvement while generating the crucial funds required to sustain the organization’s initiatives.
Through campaigns like these, the organization hopes not only to provide immediate assistance to the thousands of homeless cats but also to encourage a greater sense of responsibility among pet owners in the community.
