A Celebration of Craftsmanship: The XXXIII Feria Insular de Artesanía 2022

This Wednesday marked the exciting presentation of the XXXIII Feria Insular de Artesanía 2022, a significant event for artisans across the Canary Islands. The gathering was attended by a lineup of notable figures, including Sergio Lloret, the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura; Matías Peña García, the mayor of Antigua; and Nereida Brito, the president of the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca. They were joined by municipal councilors, including those responsible for culture, Agustín G. Rodríguez, and commerce and craftsmanship, Domingo Pérez.

A Rich History

The Feria Insular de Antigua has a rich heritage, first emerging 33 years ago as an initiative by the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, supported by the local government of Antigua. Mayor Matías Peña highlighted this history during his remarks about the significance of the festival. The festival has evolved into a celebration of local craftsmanship, bringing together artisans, showcasing their skills, and promoting traditional trades that are at risk of dying out.

A Timely Return

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the collective and the Ayuntamiento de Antigua reached a consensus that it was time to reignite this cherished tradition. “It’s crucial to support the sector and represent the traditional crafts that require generational renewal, even without a dedicated venue,” stated Peña. Their commitment to revitalizing the event underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage and its relevance in contemporary society.

Event Details and Participation

Scheduled from May 26 to May 29, the XXXIII Feria Insular de Artesanía will gather approximately 200 artisans from all the Canary Islands. With an impressive allocation of funds — 150,000 euros from the Ayuntamiento de Antigua and an additional 40,000 euros from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura — this year’s event is set to be a grand affair. These resources underscore the municipality’s commitment to fostering local arts and crafts, essential for the cultural fabric of the region.

Artisan-Centric Focus

Nereida Brito, the president of the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, conveyed her enthusiasm for the high level of participation from artisans and craftspersons. She emphasized that the event prioritizes these individuals by reserving spaces specifically for them, eliminating areas traditionally allocated for markets or public institutions. This decision reflects a desire to create a vibrant environment where artisans can showcase their work and engage directly with the public, ensuring a meaningful experience for both creators and attendees.

Future Developments

During the announcement, President Sergio Lloret addressed concerns regarding the renovation of the venue designated for the Feria Insular. He outlined plans for a two-phase execution of improvements, ensuring that the facility will be ready for the next edition of the event. This commitment reinforces the island’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure for cultural events, ensuring that the traditions of the Canary Islands can thrive for generations to come.

A Festival of Culture and Craftsmanship

The XXXIII Feria Insular de Artesanía 2022 not only serves as a platform to showcase handicrafts but also revitalizes community spirit. As artisans gather, they exemplify the resilience and creativity of their crafts. This event is more than just a market; it is an expression of identity, tradition, and a collective effort to engage younger generations in the preservation of their cultural legacy.

As the date approaches, excitement continues to build around this longstanding festival, which promises to be a highlight on the cultural calendar of Fuerteventura this year.
