Assessment of European Next Generation Programs: 80% Invested in Fuerteventura

Next Generation European Funds in Fuerteventura: An Urban and Ecological Journey

On November 27, 2025, a significant milestone was reached regarding the execution of European funds in Fuerteventura. Rosario Sánchez, the Secretary of State for Tourism, announced an impressive 80% completion rate for investments under the Next Generation EU program. This program, which brings a total of €18.7 million, is part of the Spanish government’s strategy aimed at recovery, transformation, and resilience amidst ongoing economic challenges and environmental concerns.

A Glimpse into Fuerteventura’s Sustainable Future

During her visit to the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sánchez highlighted the astounding progress on various projects that aim to enhance the island’s cultural and historical heritage. Accompanied by local representatives, including President Lola García and Tourism Counselor Marlene Figueroa, they assessed ongoing works at protected landscapes, such as Vallebrón and Vallegrande, as well as the renovation of the Casa del Coronel market in La Oliva. These initiatives are funded through the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD), emphasizing the local mission to not only attract tourists but also to celebrate and protect the island’s rich history.

Investment Allocation and Project Overview

The Cabildo Insular is channeling over €9 million into various historical and infrastructural projects aimed at rejuvenating the island. These include restoring historical sites like the Tostón Defensive Tower in El Cotillo, the Morro Velosa viewpoint, and urban improvements along the Puerto del Rosario Avenue. Furthermore, efforts to restore natural environments such as Vallebrón, Vallegrande, and the Jandía Salinas are also in motion.

A notable project within this financial support is the development of a Big Data platform that will track socio-economic indicators related to tourism. This platform aims to provide data-driven insights that help manage the island’s tourism strategically. Investments in smart tourist information points and enhanced beach services reflect a commitment to local consumption and sustainability, emphasizing initiatives like Kilómetro Cero—a promotion of local produce.

A Holistic Approach to Tourism

Sánchez elaborated that these projects extend far beyond improving tourist experiences; they are integral to the long-term sustainability of both the destinations and the local businesses. She assured that these investments will help steer Fuerteventura toward a more sustainable tourism model, one that supports quality jobs and preserves the well-being of local residents.

President Lola García echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that protecting Fuerteventura’s landscapes and local identity is vital. She pointed out that the Tourism Sustainability Plan ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ will involve multi-sectoral strategies throughout the island to maintain its natural beauty for generations to come.

Community Commitment to Sustainability

Marlene Figueroa spotlighted the Cabildo’s unwavering commitment to managing the island’s resources effectively. Notably, the 80% execution rate reflects this dedication to achieving what she termed triple sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. This trio serves as a framework to gauge success in implementing the funds, ensuring that local communities flourish alongside tourism.

A Historic Investment

Sánchez highlights these initiatives as part of Spain’s most substantial public investment in the tourism sector. The investments are poised to have a far-reaching impact on both Fuerteventura and Spain as a whole, demonstrating that sustainable tourism can coexist with preservation efforts. They signify an important chapter in the ongoing evolution of Fuerteventura, aiming to create a balance between growth and conservation.

In an era where challenges regarding the environment and local economies are profound, Fuerteventura presents an inspiring example of how thoughtful investment and community collaboration can guide a bright, sustainable future in tourism.
