Betancuria: Host of the Debate on the Challenges Facing Historical Sites in the Canary Islands

Celebrating Cultural Heritage: The First Encuentro de Conjuntos Históricos de Canarias

This week, the picturesque town of Betancuria in Fuerteventura will serve as a vibrant backdrop for a significant event in the Canary Islands—the inaugural Encuentro de Conjuntos Históricos de Canarias. The occasion is being inaugurated by some key figures in the region, including Migdalia Machín, the Canary Islands’ Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture; Lola García, the president; Horacio Umpiérrez, the Vice-Minister of Culture and Cultural Heritage; and Enrique Cerdeña, the mayor of Betancuria.

The gathering, scheduled for June 17 and 18 at the Archaeological Museum of Betancuria, seeks to convene specialists, technical personnel, and public officials dedicated to the preservation and management of historical sites declared as Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) across the islands. With almost fifty declared historical conjuntos in the Canaries, this agenda is both timely and crucial as it aims to address the multiple challenges facing these cultural treasures.

An Initiative for Reflection and Dialogue

This event offers a unique opportunity for reflection and dialogue among experts in cultural heritage. It aims to foster collective brainstorming on the pressing issues confronting these historical spaces—issues that are not only relevant locally but resonate with the broader context of heritage preservation worldwide. By pooling insights and experiences, participants hope to cultivate shared strategies that effectively address these challenges.

Challenges on the Horizon: What’s at Stake?

Key challenges that will be discussed at the encuentro include:

  • Tourism Pressure: The allure of the Canary Islands is undeniable, drawing tourist attention that can often overwhelm historical sites, leading to degradation.

  • Resident Displacement: As tourism flourishes, long-term residents may find it increasingly difficult to remain in their homes, leading to a loss of local culture and community.

  • Decline of Traditional Commerce: The rise of novelty shops and international brands often sidelines local businesses that have played a vital role in the island’s heritage.

  • Administrative Complexity: Navigating the bureaucratic landscape for heritage rehabilitation can be daunting, often leading to delays or halted projects.

During different thematic sessions, professionals from diverse fields—history, architecture, urban planning, cultural heritage management, and public governance—will discuss these issues. By offering a platform for sharing best practices and success cases, the event aims to inspire actionable solutions.

Cultural Activities: More Than Just Dialogue

In addition to the serious discussions, the Encuentro de Conjuntos Históricos de Canarias will also feature a range of cultural activities. One highlight is a concert by the renowned Arife Band, showcasing the rich musical heritage of the islands. Attendees will also have the chance to enjoy a theatrical tour of the historic village of Betancuria, allowing them to immerse themselves in the vibrant stories of the area.

Collaborative Efforts for the Future

Organized by the Government of Canarias in partnership with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Town Hall of Betancuria, this event embodies a collaborative spirit aimed at fostering sustainable strategies for managing and preserving the unique cultural identity of the islands. By bringing together different stakeholders—government officials, technical experts, and local community members—the encuentro presents an invaluable opportunity to reimagine the future of cultural heritage in the Canary Islands.

In essence, this gathering is more than just an event; it’s a step towards safeguarding the rich tapestry of history and culture that defines the beautiful Canary Islands. Through collective effort and dialogue, there’s hope for viable solutions to ensure that these historical conjuntos endure for generations to come.
