Enhancements in Betancuria’s Historical Heart
This past Friday, the Ayuntamiento de Betancuria unveiled a series of impressive improvements made to the historical ensemble of the Villa Capital Histórica de Canarias. Funded through grants totaling €300,000, these enhancements reflect a strong commitment to preserving and beautifying one of the Canary Islands’ most treasured locations.
The Vision Behind the Upgrades
Marcelino Cerdeña, the mayor of Betancuria, showcased the results of these renovations to a group of parliamentary deputies from the Canary Islands. Among them were Mario Cabrera and Dolores García, who played crucial roles in advocating for this necessary investment. Accompanying them was Candelaria Umpiérrez, the director of Ordenación y Promoción Turística from the Government of the Canary Islands. Their presence signifies the collaborative effort involved in bringing the vision for Betancuria to life.
A Spectrum of Improvements
The list of improvements is extensive, focusing primarily on enhancing the historical appeal and functionality of the Villa. Key updates include:
-
Pavement Restoration: The streets of Betancuria have received a facelift with newly-improved pavements, making them safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
-
Wall Maintenance: The restoration and cleaning of containment walls have not only enhanced the aesthetic appearance but also ensured structural integrity.
-
Safety Measures: New wooden fencing has been installed around certain areas to bolster safety for both residents and visitors.
-
Historical Restoration: A notable project is the reconstruction of the old well in the Plaza de la Iglesia. This was done with great care, respecting the original masonry to maintain authenticity.
-
Urban Furniture and Greenery: New planters and urban furniture have been added to paths and streets, contributing to the overall attractiveness of the area.
-
Lighting and Signage: Moreover, an expansion in lighting illuminates the pathways beautifully, while new signage displaying the names of various localities improves navigation for tourists.
A Tribute in Sculpture
One of the most striking additions to Betancuria is a sculptural tribute dedicated to the traditional craft of cheese-making, skillfully crafted by artisan Juan Miguel Cubas. This sculpture serves as a warm welcome to tourists and highlights an important cultural heritage, further enriching the town’s character.
Financial Backing and Future Initiatives
The upgrades in Betancuria were made possible through the Subvención Capital Histórica de Canarias, which the Ayuntamiento initiated. This has been a collective journey, beginning with an investment of €100,000 in 2017 from the Directorate of Tourism Planning. An additional €200,000 is still in progress, reflecting ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the town. The mayor, Marcelino Cerdeña, expressed gratitude for the support from the deputies in the Parliament of the Canary Islands and is hopeful for further funding in 2019.
Ongoing Commitment to Preservation
The improvements in Betancuria mark not only a revitalization of the town’s physical landscape but also a broader commitment to preserving its cultural and historical essence. The collaboration between local government and state representatives showcases the importance of working together to maintain the unique heritage of the Canary Islands, ensuring that Betancuria remains an inviting destination for tourists and a cherished home for its residents.
