Bidding for the New Sustainable Solar ‘Starlight’ Streetlights by Cofete

Illuminating Cofete: A New Dawn for Fuerteventura’s Night Sky

Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Fuerteventura, Cofete stands as a testament to the island’s wild beauty and harmonious coexistence with humanity. Soon, this iconic locale will receive an innovative upgrade designed to enhance its natural splendor—sustainable night lighting that protects both the celestial skies and local wildlife.

The Project: “Alumbrado Starlight en Cofete”

In a pioneering move, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has initiated the auction of the “Alumbrado Starlight en Cofete” project. Supported by the Next Generation EU funds under the Sustainable Tourism Plan (PSTD), this initiative aligns closely with the “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program. The aim? To create an environmentally-friendly lighting system that nurtures Fuerteventura’s exceptional nocturnal environment while ensuring safety and comfort for visitors and residents alike.

A Commitment to Preserve the Night Sky

Lola García, the president of Cabildo, emphasized the crucial need to safeguard the quality of Fuerteventura’s night sky. The initiative is not merely about aesthetics; it has significant scientific and astronomical implications. By respecting the nocturnal environment, the project aims to maintain the ecological balance that products the island’s unique biodiversity.

Ensuring Safety and Comfort

Marlene Figueroa, the Tourism Counselor, firmly advocates for this vital intervention. By prioritizing the natural setting of Cofete, the plan promises to reduce light pollution and elevate the overall visitor experience. “Investing in our natural environment means embracing sustainable tourism,” she asserts. This guiding principle emphasizes that enhancing the physical landscape can directly contribute to the island’s overall tourism appeal.

Upgrading the Lighting System

One of the most significant aspects of the “Alumbrado Starlight” project is the planned upgrade of outdated lighting systems. This transition will see the removal of obsolete luminaires that have succumbed to the island’s harsh climatic conditions, particularly its saline environment. The new lighting will be based on Starlight-approved technology, which aims to preserve the beauty of the night sky while ensuring high efficiency and longevity.

A Focus on Energy Efficiency

The project will introduce a photovoltaic public lighting system that embodies cutting-edge sustainability standards. The proposed lighting will feature solar luminaires utilizing monocristalline silicon panels and long-lasting batteries. Equipped with Astro LED lights, this system will operate autonomously from the electrical grid, boasting an impressive battery life—up to 26 hours without motion detection and seven hours with.

A Lasting Solution for a Unique Environment

The transition to solar-powered lighting not only promises efficiency but also ensures a resilient solution capable of withstanding Cofete’s demanding environmental parameters. This move represents a significant step toward creating a long-lasting, self-sufficient lighting system that is in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural landscapes.

As Fuerteventura ventures further into sustainable tourism, the “Alumbrado Starlight en Cofete” project symbolizes a commitment to preserving its rich environmental heritage for future generations. By enhancing the natural beauty of Cofete, this initiative paves the way for a new standard in eco-conscious tourism, allowing visitors to bask in the luminous wonders of both the land and the sky above.
