Canary Oil Wins the Award for Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the Canary Islands at Agrocanarias 2026

The 9th Edition of Agrocanarias: A Celebration of Exceptional Olive Oil

The charming island of La Gomera recently hosted the ninth edition of the Agrocanarias competition, a prestigious event dedicated to recognizing the best olive oils produced in the Canary Islands. Held on March 18 and 19, this year’s competition spotlighted the exceptional quality of local olive oils, garnering a total of ten awards—three special distinctions and seven medals—out of 21 distinct entries from various almazaras (olive oil mills) across the Canary Islands.

A Diverse Range of Participants

This year’s participants came from a broad geographic spectrum, including Fuerteventura, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, and El Hierro. The variety of olives—namely arbequina, hojiblanca, and picual—reflects the rich agricultural diversity found in the Canaries. The competition served not just as a showcase for these oils but also as an opportunity to highlight the region’s burgeoning reputation as an emergent olive oil producer.

Fuerteventura: An Emerging Olive Oil Hub

Among the standout producers at the event was Aloe Vera Internacional, a company that has been cultivating aloe vera for three decades. In a bid to diversify its agricultural output, Aloe Vera Internacional ventured into olive oil production ten years ago. The company’s dedication has paid off, as evidenced by the prestigious awards now attributed to its products, showcasing Fuerteventura’s emergence as a key player in the Canarian olive oil scene.

The Prize-Winning Process

The awarded olive oil undergoes a meticulous cold pressing process, which preserves the natural flavors and health benefits of the olives. This process is particularly important for maintaining the quality and aroma that distinguish artisanal oils from mass-produced alternatives. By utilizing olives from their own cultivated lands, Aloe Vera Internacional ensures the integrity and premium quality of their oil, providing consumers with a product that stands out in taste and health benefits.

Recognition of Quality

During the award ceremony, Narvay Quintero, the Canarian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, emphasized the significance of reviving the Official AOVE Agrocanarias Contest after a hiatus due to unproductive agricultural campaigns caused by various meteorological factors. Quintero articulated the dual purpose of the competition: not only to celebrate the exceptional quality of Canarian olive oils but also to cement the status of this localized product.

Beyond Tradition: The Future of Olive Oil in the Canaries

The minister noted that while olive oil production does not have a long-standing tradition in the Canary Islands, it has seen a remarkable surge in recent years. This increase can be attributed to both innovative agricultural practices and a growing appreciation for gourmet products among consumers. The Agrocanarias competition plays a vital role in this renaissance, promoting local products and advocating for their place within the broader culinary landscape.

A Culinary Treasure

As the reputation of Canarian olive oils continues to grow, it becomes increasingly clear that these products hold great promise for the future. The dedication shown by producers like Aloe Vera Internacional sets a foundation for a vibrant olive oil culture in the Canaries. With competitions like Agrocanarias fostering appreciation and recognition, the island’s olive oil may soon claim its rightful place alongside other renowned culinary treasures.
