Promoting Sustainable Mobility on Fuerteventura: The Role of PCXMSF
The citizens’ platform known as La Plataforma Ciudadana por la Movilidad Sostenible de Fuerteventura (PCXMSF) has emerged with a clear and ambitious aim: to encourage transportation models that prioritize the collective well-being, accessibility, and environmental sustainability of the island. Formed by a diverse group of individuals and organizations residing in Fuerteventura, this collective seeks to foster a public transport system that is not only universal and inclusive but also free for all.
A Vision for Public Transport
One of the cornerstone initiatives of the PCXMSF is their proposal titled “Transporte público para todas y todos.” This initiative advocates for a transportation model that is entirely public and well-coordinated between both municipal and insular levels. This model aims to ensure that every member of the community, regardless of origin, age, economic situation, or gender, has guaranteed access to reliable transportation. The platform firmly believes that public transport should be recognized as a universal human right, accessible to all.
Safety and Gender Perspective
In working toward this vision, the PCXMSF emphasizes the importance of safety and a gender perspective in transportation settings. They advocate for transportation options and their surrounding environments to be designed with safety as a top priority. By prioritizing security, especially for marginalized groups, the platform tackles systemic inequalities and fosters a more inclusive mobility landscape on the island.
Advancing Electrification
Another critical aspect of the PCXMSF’s agenda involves advancing the electrification of public transportation—specifically, the guaguas (buses) and other public transit options. The collective views this approach as essential for reducing reliance on fossil fuels, thus addressing the urgent environmental challenges posed by climate change. Transitioning to electrified public transport means fewer emissions and a step closer to sustainable living.
Concrete Proposals for Improvement
To make these visions a reality, the PCXMSF has outlined several practical measures. One proposal includes the installation of marquesinas (bus shelters) at all public transport stops to ensure that waiting passengers have a comfortable and protected space. Additionally, they advocate for the development of a mobile application that will provide real-time tracking of guagua locations, enhancing the overall user experience and encouraging greater public transport usage.
The Urgency of Collaborative Action
In light of the pressing climate, energy, and social crises, the PCXMSF argues that it is urgent to prioritize the common good and sustainability. A more efficient and user-friendly transportation model can dramatically improve the quality of life across Fuerteventura, but such a transformation requires collaboration among local and insular administrations. The platform believes that collective action will foster a more sustainable infrastructure that serves all residents of the island.
Upcoming Public Presentation
To raise awareness and engage the community, the PCXMSF will hold a public presentation on Wednesday, November 5, at 6 PM in the Centro Polivalente del Charco, Puerto del Rosario. Attendance is open to all citizens, providing everyone an opportunity to learn more about the platform’s goals, proposals, and how they can contribute to creating a sustainable transportation system for Fuerteventura.
This initiative not only aims to transform transport on the island but also seeks to build a more just and equitable society, promoting sustainable living for future generations.
