El Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo: A Colorful Celebration

The 36th edition of the International Kite Festival in Corralejo has once again transformed the skies of Fuerteventura into a vibrant tapestry of colors and movement. Running until Sunday, November 12, this year’s festival has attracted approximately 210 kite flyers from around twenty different countries, making it a grand spectacle for both participants and spectators alike.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva, the organizing municipality, has emphasized the event’s dedication to preserving the environment and promoting sustainability. “The International Kite Festival is an iconic event that has been an essential part of life in La Oliva over the years. It embodies a harmonious connection between tourism and the environment, and we will continue advocating for its preservation,” he remarked. This commitment not only enhances the festival’s charm but also ensures that the natural beauty surrounding the event is respected.

David Fajardo, the councilor for Tourism and Environment, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the festival showcases all the attractions of La Oliva: “golden sandy beaches, spectacular winter weather, biodiversity, pristine landscapes, and activities that respect the environment.”

Protecting the Natural Landscape

The La Oliva Town Council has placed special emphasis on protecting the natural area of the Dunas de Corralejo. To facilitate this, they have arranged special buses for attendees and provided guides to help visitors navigate the trails without damaging the area’s endemic flora. This initiative underscores the festival’s commitment to environmental stewardship, making it a model for responsible tourism.

The festival kicked off on Friday with an inaugural fly at Las Grandes Playas de Corralejo, a location chosen once again due to its overwhelming success in the previous year. The sight of kites soaring against the backdrop of the ocean is a magical experience that draws crowds year after year.

More Than Just Kites

This year, the International Kite Festival in Fuerteventura is not just about the stunning displays of kites. Attendees can enjoy a wide array of parallel activities under the umbrella of the Wind Festival. This includes inflatable castles, family workshops, the creation of children’s kites, Brazilian kite workshops, and environmental interpretation workshops throughout Saturday and Sunday.

As the sun sets, the festival continues with concerts and live music. The popular band Los Salvapantallas will take the stage on Saturday at the Avenida de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, while Sunday will feature a tribute to Coldplay with the “Music of Spheres” tour. These musical festivities enhance the overall atmosphere, making it a delightful experience for all age groups.

For those interested in participating in the various workshops or attending the concerts, registration and a detailed program of activities can be found on the official website, corralejokitefest.com.

In summary, the International Kite Festival in Corralejo stands as a testament to community spirit, environmental awareness, and the joyous celebration of culture through the art of kite flying.
