The International Ocean Film Tour Comes to Fuerteventura
The vibrant island of Fuerteventura is set to host a remarkable event that combines art, advocacy, and adventure—the International Ocean Film Tour (IOFT). Celebrating its 17th year, this acclaimed festival will dock in Corralejo’s municipal auditorium on June 23rd, 2023. This marks a historic first for the festival, which has previously journeyed through 18 countries, showcasing ocean-themed films to passionate audiences across the globe.
A Celebration of Oceans and Culture
The International Ocean Film Tour has made its name over nearly two decades by promoting awareness and protection for our oceans. Its unique programming includes an impressive lineup of films that explore marine life, environmental challenges, and stories of activism. This year is particularly special as it coincides with the enchanting night of San Juan—a night celebrated with bonfires and festivities across Spain.
The Festival’s Offerings
During its Fuerteventura premiere, the festival will screen six carefully selected shorts from a diverse array of submissions worldwide, all focused on female representation and civic activism. The event will highlight Madison Stewart, an international activist, who will guide audiences on this cinematic voyage, showcasing voices from seven countries across three continents.
With a total runtime of 120 minutes, the films promise excitement and a rich visual experience. This segment aligns seamlessly with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing circular economy principles and environmental stewardship.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
One of the defining features of the IOFT is its commitment to accessibility. All films will be presented in their original language with subtitles, accompanied by simultaneous translation into sign language. This ensures that the festival is welcoming and inclusive for everyone, engaging audiences regardless of their background.
Environmental Advocacy
The IOFT serves primarily as a platform for raising awareness about the conservation and protection of the oceans, particularly within the Canary Islands. With an emphasis on issues like real equality, social inclusion, sustainable cities, and water management, the festival encourages attendees to consider their role in preserving the environment.
An Array of Documentaries
The ninth volume of the festival showcases an impressive collection of documentaries from countries including Australia, Germany, Tonga, Lebanon, Poland, England, and Spain. Among these is the thought-provoking short titled “The Power of Activism,” featuring Madison Stewart and others who underscore the vital link between activism and ocean conservation.
Additional notable films include:
- “No Limits”, a narrative driven by Ben Neumann, a blind surfer, celebrating courage and determination.
- “Facing Monsters”, which follows Kerby Brown as he aims to conquer a notoriously challenging wave.
- “George & the Whales,” a collaboration that takes viewers to the depths of the ocean.
- “Stolen Fish”, highlighting the pressing issue of illegal fishing in Gambia.
- “Sweet Adventure,” an energetic feature about surfers navigating the waters of El Salvador.
Special Guest Appearance
The festival is thrilled to welcome Gosia Juszczak, a filmmaker and journalist who will present her debut documentary “Stolen Fish.” This thought-provoking work offers a personal glimpse into the challenges faced by fishermen in Gambia, as told through the eyes of characters who navigate the complex dynamics of illegal fishing and its wider impacts.
Unique Experiences and Giveaways
In addition to the film screenings, the IOFT will create a unique atmosphere infused with surprises, including exclusive giveaways. Attendees will have a chance to participate in a drawing for an apnea clinic tailored for surfers, held in collaboration with Buceo Norte Gran Canaria. This experience promises to equip participants with underwater techniques and skills, all while raising awareness about mindful diving practices.
Collaboration with Local NGOs
The International Ocean Film Tour proudly partners with the Clean Ocean Project, a local NGO dedicated to environmental education and marine conservation efforts in Fuerteventura. This partnership not only enriches the festival experience but also advocates for the preservation of the island’s stunning landscape and marine ecosystems. As part of its efforts, the festival will actively support the “Save the Wave” campaign, aimed at opposing the construction of a large pier in Corralejo.
Expanding the IOFT’s Reach
The IOFT’s journey in Spain does not end in Fuerteventura; it will also make stops at the Guimerá Theatre in Tenerife and the iconic Jameos del Agua Auditorium in Lanzarote before continuing to 15 other cities across the country. Each screening represents a moment to come together in a collective effort to honor and protect our oceans.
With its focus on community engagement, cinematic storytelling, and environmental advocacy, the International Ocean Film Tour is gearing up to make a significant impact. It promises to be a journey not just through captivating visual narratives, but also through the shared commitment to safeguarding our world’s oceans for future generations.
