Corralejo Closes Its 36th Kite Festival with Record Attendance of 70,000
A Spectacular Gathering of Kites and Community Spirit
The 36th International Kite Festival held in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, concluded on November 12, 2023, bringing together an astonishing 70,000 visitors. This year’s festival not only broke attendance records but also showcased the perfect weather conditions ideal for kite flying, with clear skies and a steady breeze that delighted both participants and spectators alike.
A Festive Atmosphere of Activities
The festival was not merely about kites; it included a wide array of activities tailored for all ages. Over 700 school children participated in specially designed events, while nearly 400 people attended family workshops. Each day was filled with entertaining programs, drawing visitors to enjoy various performances and breathtaking kite displays. As night fell, the atmosphere transformed with concerts and spectacular drone shows over Corralejo Bay, attracting additional crowds eager to witness the aerial spectacle.
Kite Competitions and Enthusiasts
The festival featured a variety of kite flying competitions, highlighting the skills of both local and international kite enthusiasts. Among the most exciting events was the Rokaku kite battle, where pilots maneuver very light kites in a strategic showdown to be the last one flying. British kite flyer Roy Paine and German competitor Christof Tehgelmann emerged victorious over the competition held on Saturday and Sunday.
A New Twist: Acrobatic Kites and Nighttime Displays
This year’s festival introduced captivating innovations, such as a photography contest and acrobatic kite displays. Skilled kite fliers amazed the audience by synchronizing movements to music, managing to keep up to 13 kites in the air simultaneously without tangled lines. Additionally, the nighttime drone show featured 200 drones dancing in the sky, creating stunning visual representations like the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, and even local icons like the silhouette of Isla de Lobos, which left attendees mesmerized.
Environmental Awareness and Community Engagement
Organizers made sure that the festival maintained a strong message of sustainability and environmental respect. Raúl Rivero, the festival’s organizer, expressed satisfaction with the event’s success, emphasizing the focus on raising awareness about ecological responsibility amid the festivities. Attendees enjoyed the vibrant displays while learning about the importance of preserving their beautiful surroundings.

Visitors had the opportunity to relax on the picturesque beaches of Corralejo while being surrounded by a colorful panorama of kites. David Fajardo, the local councilor for Tourism and Environment, highlighted how the festival serves as a powerful promotional tool for Fuerteventura, showcasing not only the region’s beauty but also its endeavors for environmental sustainability.

The 36th International Kite Festival in Corralejo was organized by the Tourism Department of the La Oliva City Council, with the support of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Tourism Department. The initiative received funding through Promotur Turismo Canarias, which is part of the European RECOVERY EU Fund and the EcoTur2 program. Collaborators included Naviera Armas and RIU Hotels and Resorts, ensuring a comprehensive backing for this community celebration.
