Construction of the Corralejo II Health Center to Begin Before Summer 2026

New Healthcare Developments in Fuerteventura: An Overview

The Corralejo II Health Center Project

Exciting developments are underway in Fuerteventura as the construction of the new Corralejo II Health Center approaches the final stages of approval. Announced by Esther Monzón, the Canary Islands’ Health Counselor, on March 3, 2026, the project is set to commence before the summer. This facility is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services by providing quality early care in response to the island’s growing population.

The initiative is the result of a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, including Fuerteventura’s Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government, municipal authorities, and the region’s health department. The coordinated planning has culminated in a substantial infrastructure investment of €3.4 million aimed at establishing primary care resources across all municipalities on the island.

Demand for Specialized Care in Southern Fuerteventura

In response to another long-standing demand, the development of a Specialized Care Center (Centro de Atención Especializada, CAE) in La Lajita, located in the municipality of Pájara, is also progressing. Currently in the project drafting phase, this center aims to bridge the gap in specialized care services in the less populated southern region of the island.

The CAE is designed to occupy a minimum of 16,000 square meters and promises to offer a comprehensive range of modern medical services tailored to meet the current and future needs of the local population. Health officials including Monzón and Lola García emphasize that this facility will enhance access to specialized healthcare for residents of southern Fuerteventura, delivering services closer to where they live.

Upgrades to the Fuerteventura General Hospital

In addition to the new health centers, significant improvements are also being made at the Fuerteventura General Hospital. An investment of €1.3 million will enhance various healthcare service areas within the hospital. Among the notable initiatives is the introduction of a Home Hospitalization Unit (HADO), which has already provided medical and nursing care to 13 patients in the comfort of their homes.

Furthermore, the hospital will see the construction of a two-level annex, expanding its capacity for care and storage by over 500 square meters. This addition will include a new elevator to connect the parking area with the emergency section, making it easier for those with mobility challenges to access essential services. The estimated cost for these upgrades is €403,824, with a timeline of six months set for completion after project approval.

Reduced Waiting Times for Surgical Interventions

One of the most promising outcomes of these ongoing healthcare improvements is a noticeable reduction in waiting times for surgical procedures. Under Monzón’s leadership, 66 new professionals have been integrated into the healthcare system in Fuerteventura since June 2023, with half being specialist physicians. This staffing boost has already led to a 15% decrease in the surgical waiting list.

Monzón reported that the average wait time for surgical interventions has decreased significantly, dropping from 80 days to a much more manageable 53 days. This accomplishment highlights the positive impact of increased staff and resources on patient care.

Continued Commitment to Healthcare Improvement

These projects and improvements reflect a dedicated effort by the Canary Islands Government to address the historical healthcare needs of Fuerteventura’s residents. As the island continues to grow both in population and tourism, the strategic development of healthcare infrastructure is crucial for ensuring that all residents have access to necessary medical services. The collaborative approach involving various local authorities underscores a commitment to advancing the overall health and wellbeing of the community.

With the promising developments in healthcare, residents of Fuerteventura can expect a future with greater access to essential medical services, improved patient care, and a reduction in waiting times for procedures.
