The Long-Awaited Revamp of Corralejo’s Seafront
The long-anticipated renovation of Corralejo’s seafront, situated in the heart of Fuerteventura’s tourist hub, has sparked controversy. The project aims to create a pedestrian walkway that connects the port to the stunning natural dunes park. However, not everyone is on board, as two local restaurant owners have recently lodged complaints against the La Oliva Town Hall, feeling aggrieved by the changes that this new pathway will bring.
Despite being a long-standing demand from the tourist sector, the construction of this seafront promenade has raised concerns among some local business owners. They argue that the renovation will encroach on the space they have enjoyed for their outdoor terraces, limiting their operations in what has traditionally been a public area.
The Wall of Discontent
One of the main voices in the dispute is the owner of Waikiki, who has filed a formal complaint, asserting that the new promenade infringes on his property. This complaint specifically targets the area where outdoor tables and chairs are placed, which is adjacent to the beach and currently benefits from a municipal permit valid for four years, according to Canarias Ahora.
The restaurateur also highlights the significance of a wall—remaining remnants of an older roundabout—that has previously served as an informal windbreak for his terrace. While he defends his right to this space, the town hall maintains that both the beach and the roundabout are public properties, complicating the issue further.
An Unequal Distribution of Space
Adding to the debate, the owner of Patai Beach has also resorted to legal action, presenting a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. He accuses the Town Hall of administrative favoritism, alleging that the renovation is being utilized to benefit certain establishments disproportionately. He contends that the distribution of space post-intervention will be unjust, favoring some businesses while neglecting others, thereby creating an imbalance in the local economy.
The Revamp Project
The seafront renovation is not just a point of contention—it is also a project that has been in the pipeline for years. Local entrepreneurs, residents, and visitors alike have clamored for improvements to enhance Corralejo’s appeal. The current project, boasting an investment of 1.7 million euros, aims to create a coastal path that promotes smoother transit along the shoreline.
The transformation includes plans for various activity areas, shaded zones, and designated access to bathing areas and nautical activities. A significant focus of the project is inclusivity, with provisions being made for accessible beach access for individuals with reduced mobility (PMR). Additionally, green spaces with native vegetation and informative signage are set to enrich the landscape, contributing to the overall aesthetic and functional quality of the seaside experience.
As Corralejo prepares for this substantial renovation, the balancing act between advancing local tourism and supporting existing businesses continues to unfold, revealing both opportunities and challenges in equal measure.
