David de Vera (CC) Declared Mayor of Puerto del Rosario

David de Vera Becomes Mayor of Puerto del Rosario: A New Era Begins

In an electoral event that has garnered significant attention, David de Vera, a member of the nationalist party, assumed the role of mayor of Puerto del Rosario this past Saturday. After four years of opposition under Coalición Canaria, de Vera’s ascent is framed by a commitment to restore “the pride and institutional respect that the capital of Fuerteventura deserves.”

The Election Results

David de Vera secured the mayoralty with a total of twelve votes in favor. This coalition comprised the seven votes from Coalición Canaria, alongside four votes from the Socialists, including former mayor Juan Jiménez’s support, and an unexpected vote from Mayra Marichal of Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF). Meanwhile, the newly-formed party Fuerteventura Avanza and the Partido Popular voted against the coalition, marking a division among the council members.

Political Landscape

Coalición Canaria emerged as the leading political force within Puerto del Rosario in the recent elections, attracting 3,922 votes, which translated into seven council seats. Fuerteventura Avanza, a party established during the last legislative term, was a close second, receiving 2,672 votes that earned them four seats. The political dynamics in the area reflect not just shifts in voter sentiment but also a changing landscape, evidenced by the inclusion of Vox, which made its debut in the city council.

Coalition Agreements

The alliance between the nationalists and the socialist party extends beyond Puerto del Rosario, reaching municipalities such as Pájara, Tuineje, and La Oliva, as well as the Cabildo of the island. Lola García from Coalición Canaria is expected to assume her position on June 26, with the backing of five Socialist councilors. Interestingly, this coalition has effectively sidelined the Partido Popular, despite their standing as the second-most voted party in certain administrative bodies.

David de Vera’s Vision

Past 12:30 PM, David de Vera officially became the new mayor, delivering a speech that articulated his unwavering dedication to uplifting Puerto del Rosario. He emphasized the importance of nurturing a community that reflects the dignity of the island’s capital.

In outlining his administration’s agenda, de Vera highlighted key challenges and aspirations that lie ahead for the next four years. These include enhancing urban planning, developing necessary infrastructures such as a sports city, improving accessibility, and renewing critical water supply systems—a task he recognizes as integral as part of the Consortium of Water Supply for Fuerteventura (CAAF).

Focus on Community Well-being

The newly elected government plans to implement people-centered policies. A pivotal aspect of their agenda is to bolster home assistance services to support both the sick and their caregivers. Employment generation and economic activity for young residents are also on their priority list, framed through fiscal measures that will stimulate small businesses, freelancers, and entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the new administration recognizes the significance of the primary sector as a vital alternative for diversifying the economy. It also intends to enhance cultural initiatives and preserve historical heritage, viewing these elements as strategic for a municipality that balances future aspirations with its rich past.

Immediate Priorities

Starting as early as Monday, de Vera will take charge of initiatives outlined during his campaign. He notably mentioned plans to overhaul urban development and social services, areas that he personally intends to lead. His experience as a former councilor in the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, enforcing water resource management during his previous tenure with Coalición Canaria, shines through as an asset for his new role.

A Background in Governance

Before stepping into the role of mayor, de Vera held prominent positions, including serving as a councilor and director general of Livestock for the Government of the Canary Islands between 2015 and 2019. This experience positions him with a robust understanding of the governance and administrative challenges facing Puerto del Rosario.

Through these developments, various community stakeholders will be watching closely to see how David de Vera and his coalition navigate the complexities of governance while aiming to elevate Puerto del Rosario to new heights.
