The Ongoing Development and Infrastructure Initiatives in Puerto del Rosario

A New Financial Framework

In a recent discussion, a city councilor emphasized the importance of integrating unspent funds into the next financial year, advocating for a “realistic” budget that maintains financial equilibrium. This budget prioritizes essential services, strategic investments, and co-financing schemes designed to bolster critical infrastructure. The focus on a balanced budget reflects a pragmatic approach to governance, ensuring that resources are allocated wisely, particularly in times of economic uncertainty.

Progress on Primero de Mayo Avenue

Of notable significance is the anticipated completion of the Primero de Mayo Avenue renovation project. This project is in its final phase, with only about one to one and a half months of work remaining, as noted by De Vera. The renovation involves a complete overhaul of the existing services and paves the way for the pedestrianization of the historic downtown area. Such steps not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city but also aim to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

The project, which has received a boost from the Government of the Canary Islands through the Tourism and Employment Department, along with contributions from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the city council, has a budget exceeding two million euros. Spanning from Virgen del Rosario Street to the vicinity of the municipal market, this ambitious initiative is designed to transform urban life in Puerto del Rosario. De Vera describes it as “an ambitious and beautiful project,” acknowledging that the execution may take roughly 12 months to reach full fruition.

Revitalization of the Municipal Market

In conjunction with infrastructure developments, the Municipal Market is set for reactivation, following the completion of necessary legal assessments. The city council is committed to reestablishing the butcher stalls, asserting that these vendors have played a pivotal role in sustaining the market. “They have kept the market alive, and we were committed to supporting them,” says De Vera. The plan includes issuing tenders for additional stalls and hospitality establishments, with an optimistic timeline suggesting that these could be awarded within the next six months.

Phasing Out the El Charco Power Plant

Another pressing topic of discussion has been the planned decommissioning of the power plant situated in El Charco. Starting in May, the dismantling process will commence, a development that De Vera attributes largely to the concerted efforts of Puerto del Rosario’s city council. He highlights the collaborative resistance from various local administrations, including the Cabildo and the city council, as key to making this transition possible. “The possibility of this happening today is because we have opposed it from the very beginning,” he states firmly.

Political Dynamics at Play

The discourse surrounding the power plant’s closure also unveils deeper political undercurrents. The mayor expresses skepticism regarding the role of the Government of the Canary Islands, alleging that the actions of the regional councilor are driven by political motives rather than genuine concern for the community. “He comes to sell something he has had no part in,” asserts De Vera, as he emphasizes that the real impetus for this change has been the contribution of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, along with the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the city council, who have stood firm since the onset of this initiative.

Moving Forward with Community Focus

The steps being taken in Puerto del Rosario reflect a dedication to community enhancement through careful financial planning and strategic public works. The efforts extend beyond mere infrastructure development, as they foster a sense of civic pride and sustainability in the region. These initiatives are more than just projects; they are part of a larger narrative aiming to shape the future of Puerto del Rosario in a way that prioritizes its residents and their needs.
