Rescuers at Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura Save Rare Majorer Donkey in Jandía
A Compassionate Rescue Mission
In a heartwarming initiative, the Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura Rescue and Recovery Center, supported by the Chekipa Foundation, successfully rescued a Majorer donkey, an endangered species, which was found injured near the Jorós Ravine and Cofete Beach in Jandía. This rescue operation was vital, as the Majorer donkey is not only culturally significant to the Canary Islands but also faces threats to its survival.
The distress call regarding the injured wild donkey prompted swift action from the team. The rescue took place on March 11, involving a well-coordinated effort that lasted over two hours. During the operation, rescuers discovered the afflicted donkey living alongside three males and one female.
Injuries and Malnutrition
Once the donkey was transported to the rescue center, a thorough examination revealed concerning conditions. Veterinary specialists conducted a complete health assessment alongside blood tests. They determined that the rescued animal was an adult male, suffering from malnutrition and bearing numerous visible injuries.
These wounds were primarily located on the donkey’s front legs and along both sides of its neck, resulting from altercations with another male donkey during the mating season. The injuries presented a serious challenge due to their open and infected nature, compounded by the presence of fly larvae. As a result, the veterinary team opted for light sedation to calm the donkey and ensure that the treatment process could proceed smoothly.
Care and Rehabilitation Protocols
Upon settling the donkey in the care of experienced veterinary staff at Oasis Wildlife, immediate medical attention was prioritized. The veterinary team undertook the cleaning and dressing of wounds with specialized bandages, particularly for the more profound lesions.
In addition to tending to his injuries, the team implemented a deworming process and established a flexible diet tailored for wildlife recovery. This dietary approach is crucial, especially given the donkey’s transition from the wild to a rehabilitation setting.
Awaiting Full Recovery in Quarantine
As the medical and care protocols unfold, the Majorer donkey will remain in quarantine at Oasis Wildlife until he achieves a stable state of health. This period is essential, allowing the team to continuously monitor his condition and ensure that he receives all necessary treatments.
