Enhancing Youth Addiction Prevention: A New Professional Training Initiative in Fuerteventura

Introduction to Emerging Addictions

The island of Fuerteventura is taking proactive steps to tackle a pressing issue among its youth: the rise of emerging addictions, particularly relating to vaping and energy drinks. With these substances often perceived as low-risk, it’s essential to highlight their potential harms and clear the misconceptions that might surround them.

The Initiative by El Cabildo

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Service for Information and Prevention of Addictions (SIPA) under the Department of Social Action, has launched an innovative training program titled “Emerging Addictions: Vaping and Energy Drinks. Understanding Them Through Emotional Regulation.” Collaborating with the School of Health and Social Services of the Canary Islands, this initiative serves as a crucial response to growing consumption trends among the island’s youth.

Understanding the Context

Recent years have seen a significant uptick in the use of vaping devices and energy drinks among young individuals. Despite the popularity of these practices, research indicates that they can adversely affect the nervous system, sleep patterns, anxiety levels, and self-regulation processes. This emerging understanding has prompted the urgent need for specialized training among professionals who work with adolescents.

Target Audience

This training program is designed for professionals within the health, social, and psychosocial sectors of Fuerteventura. Targeting those who actively engage in addiction prevention and intervention, the course aims to equip them with the skills necessary to effectively address emerging addictions among the younger population.

A Psychological Perspective

From a psychological standpoint, the training delves deeper than just the physical effects of vaping and energy drinks. It emphasizes the connection between substance use and emotional regulation, stress management, and social integration. By providing practical tools for early detection, prevention, and intervention, this program aims to empower professionals in their roles.

Training Structure and Format

The training will occur in a semi-presential format, a structure designed to maximize accessibility and engagement.

  • Online Phase: From June 19 to June 30, participants will engage in asynchronous online sessions. This format allows for flexible learning, accommodating different schedules and responsibilities.

  • In-person Session: On July 1, a mandatory face-to-face session at the Center for Youth in Puerto del Rosario will take place. This session will center on case analysis and hands-on practice with the tools learned in the online component.

Instructor Expertise

The training will be conducted by experienced psychologists, Edgar Chinea Gámez and Alba Fernández Padrón. Their expertise will guide participants through content that includes emerging addictions, contemporary consumption patterns, emotional validation, and strategies for effective intervention.

Content Highlights

Key aspects of the training will encompass:

  • Understanding the landscape of emerging addictions.
  • Identifying new trends and patterns in youth consumption.
  • Emotional validation techniques for addressing addiction.
  • Formulating practical intervention strategies for adolescents and young adults.

Importance of the Program

Through this initiative, Fuerteventura aims not only to educate professionals but also to foster a community of informed individuals who can effectively safeguard the well-being of its youth. By understanding the complexities of emerging addictions, professionals can better support young people in navigating the challenges of substance use, providing them with the resources and knowledge they need.

This comprehensive approach to addiction prevention signifies a significant step toward enhancing community resilience and youth empowerment.
