As the vibrant skies of Corralejo in Fuerteventura come to life, the 37th edition of the International Kite Festival showcases an impressive participation of over 300 kite enthusiasts from around the globe. This cherished event has become a global reference point, attracting kite experts from numerous countries as they come together to celebrate the artistry and skill that kite flying embodies.

This year’s festival promises even more excitement, with each participant expected to showcase multiple kites. It is estimated that we could witness up to 1,000 kites dancing in the breeze, captivating onlookers and enthusiasts alike.

Winds of Change: Preparations Underway

Before the official kick-off, scheduled for this Friday, participants took to the skies at Playa de La Concha in El Cotillo to test the wind conditions. Participants recorded wind speeds of 22 to 25 kilometers per hour, coupled with pleasantly warm temperatures. As kites soared, beaches brimmed with curious spectators eager not to miss the inaugural flights.

Engaging the Community: A Collaborative Experience

This year, the festival has introduced a touching initiative by welcoming local associations of seniors from La Oliva. These group members had the chance to see firsthand the meticulous effort that goes into building kites and mastering flying techniques. Students from CEIP El Toscón also joined the festivities, fostering a delightful bond between different community segments.

Voices from the Local Government

Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva, expressed his pride in this event, stating, “The International Kite Festival is now part of our municipality’s history and has become a critical date on both local and international calendars, recognized for its unique spirit and environmental consciousness.”

David Fajardo, the councilor for Tourism and the Environment, emphasized efforts to host the festival sustainably. Measures like free public transport, environmental workshops focusing on local flora and fauna, and protective barriers around sensitive conservation areas like the Corralejo Natural Dunes Park exhibit a commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Spectacular Events and Activities

With the festival officially beginning on Friday at 10:30 AM in the magnificent Las Grandes Playas de Corralejo, the weekend will feature a plethora of exciting activities. Kite-flying exhibitions – both acrobatic and static – will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

On Friday and Saturday nights at 9:30 PM, the festival will dazzle attendees with an innovative drone music show at Corralejo Bay. Expect up to 220 drones dancing in the night sky, synchronizing movement to music while crafting stunning shapes in the darkness.

Moreover, Rokaku kite battles are set for the weekend at 1:30 PM, ensuring competitive spirits resonate across the sandy shores. Coupled with bouncing castles, children’s kite-making workshops, and Brazilian kite crafting, this festival truly offers something for everyone.
