The cost of sustainable denim can be steep. A pair of jeans from McManus’ brand retails for nearly $700, a reflection of small production runs and the challenges of sourcing sustainable materials. This price point raises questions about accessibility and affordability in the realm of sustainable fashion.

Navigating the Denim Market

For consumers seeking sustainable jeans, experts recommend looking for brands that provide detailed information about their sourcing and manufacturing processes. Dana Davis, a strategic fashion adviser, suggests examining whether brands discuss labor rights and manufacturing sites comprehensively, rather than just in select collections. Authenticity in sustainability claims is crucial, as “greenwashing” can obscure the truth.

Certifications and Consumer Choices

Certifications can serve as helpful indicators of sustainability, though no single label guarantees it. The B Corp certification, for instance, evaluates a company’s social and environmental performance.
