Understanding the Role of GESPROTUR in Local Development
In a recent statement, the manager of GESPROTUR emphasized a critical distinction regarding the initiatives proposed by the Ayuntamiento (City Council). Initially, the discussions revolved around “ideas” rather than well-formed projects that could effectively facilitate the acquisition of funding essential for their realization. Solana articulated that this discrepancy is pivotal; merely articulating demands lacks the structure needed for successful financing.
The Importance of Prepared Projects
Solana’s remarks highlighted that without a defined project—especially with land availability, necessary permits, and technical feasibility—the execution of initiatives becomes significantly delayed. When a local government brings forward a well-defined plan, the speed and efficiency of project implementation improve dramatically. The presence of concrete plans, permits, and feasibility assessments not only enhances the likelihood of success but also bolsters the overall dynamism of the project execution process.
Initiatives Underway at GESPROTUR
Despite the initial lack of fully fleshed-out proposals, Solana assured the audience that GESPROTUR has initiated technical work aimed at converting these preliminary demands into actionable projects. A focused approach is being adopted that entails drafting partial projects to address specific areas. These include enhancing the aesthetic appeal of local zones, improving waste collection systems, upgrading lighting, and providing clearer tourist signposting. Notably, the introduction of MUPIs (informative urban furniture) along the coastline is also in the pipeline, aiming to enrich the visitor experience.
Funding Progress and Initiatives
In a significant update, Solana announced that Antigua emerged as the sole municipality in Fuerteventura to apply for the MRR (Recovery and Resilience Mechanism) funding linked to the Innovando Verde initiative. This funding is particularly focused on the area of lighting, with plans indicating that the installation of new luminaires could commence as early as summer.
Moreover, Solana mentioned that GESPROTUR remains open to collaboration with all local administrations in Fuerteventura. Reflecting on past communication challenges, he noted a positive shift in outreach efforts following previous discussions on local radio. Meetings and dialogues with municipalities such as Pájara, Tuineje, and Antigua have led to a more collaborative atmosphere. He particularly praised Puerto del Rosario for their proactive approach, frequently submitting various project drafts to GESPROTUR.
A Promising Future for GESPROTUR
Regarding GESPROTUR’s overall performance, Solana expressed that 2025 was a notably productive year, and the beginnings of 2026 have shown similar promise. More than 50% of the organization’s budget is currently under allocation for initiatives taking place between April and May. In terms of tangible investments, Solana estimated that GESPROTUR’s direct actions in Fuerteventura could reach around €600,000 in 2026, not accounting for additional financing from the Ministry via infrastructure developments, tourism sustainability plans, and European funds.
Enhancing the Unique Landscape of Fuerteventura
Solana also touched on the FEDER funding line called Turismo entre Volcanes. This initiative aims to leverage the unique volcanic landscape of the archipelago, presenting opportunities for enhancing tourism and conservation efforts.
Personal Reflections: Solana’s Political Aspirations
When questioned about his political future, Solana left the door open for possibilities, stating, “I would love to return to Fuerteventura because it’s my home.” He acknowledged the nascent stage of GESPROTUR and expressed a willingness to continue leading an organization he affectionately likens to “my child.”
By fostering collaboration among local governments and exploring funding opportunities, GESPROTUR is aiming to transform ideas into fruitful projects that enhance the community’s living conditions while tapping into the unique resources that Fuerteventura has to offer. Through strategic initiatives and clear communication, the agency is laying the groundwork for a brighter future in this beautiful region.
