With ‘Costumes for the Love of Art,’ the Carnival of Puerto del Rosario Kicks Off

Celebrating El Carnaval de Los Juguetes y el Mundo Animado: A Dive into Puerto del Rosario’s Festivities

El Carnaval de Puerto del Rosario, known as El Carnaval de Los Juguetes y el Mundo Animado, officially kicked off with a vibrant pregón (opening speech) delivered by a talented group of local carnavaleros. With their creative costumes and comedic flair, they took the audience on a delightful journey through the rich history of the carnival, emphasizing its artistic significance.

The Pregón Ceremony

The pregón was hosted by Mar Castañeyra and Israel Soler, who skillfully navigated the narrative of the capital’s carnival history, harkening back to the days when the sardine was buried by the legion in a unique farewell ritual. They showcased animated performances featuring street carnavaleros from two generations, including notable figures like Silvestre Chacón, Luis Vila, Carlos Perdomo, and Javier León, who collectively transported the audience into a world of nostalgia and laughter.

Ingenious Parodies and Nostalgic Moments

The spirit of the pregón was further elevated with clever parodies brought to life. One standout sketch involved the airline “Air Carpa de Milagro,” humorously pitching flight deals complete with quirky in-flight service, such as Ron-Cola and Pella de Gofio, targeting those eager to escape the island just in time for carnival season.

The nostalgic references continued as the presenters reminisced about the mascaretes of the 60s and 70s, recounting humorous anecdotes about the local casinos and the challenges faced in the capital, like ongoing construction and the taxi shortage. With the political transition in the late 20th century, the carnival evolved, embodying the essence of freedom, glitter, and peace.

A Vibrant Kickoff

The festivities commenced with lively parades featuring various groups and comparsas (dance troupes), building excitement for the events to follow. On the main stage of the Auditorio Insular, Puerto del Rosario Mayor David de Vera, alongside the Councilor of Celebrations, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, and the Cabildo President, Lola García, introduced the candidates for Carnival Queen: five for the children’s title, four for the adult title, and three for the Grand Dame position.

Reflecting on the Past and Present

The nostalgia didn’t stop there; the presenters took a moment to critique the evolution of the carnival over the decades. They revisited the challenges experienced since the 1980s, including the loss of the Las Escuevas venue and the changes to the Plaza de La Paz in the 90s.

Moreover, topics such as the impact of social media on the carnival culture were addressed, highlighting the sometimes skewed perceptions it can create. Nevertheless, they also recognized and paid tribute to the enduring spirit of the carnavaleros, whose creativity and hard work sustain this beloved tradition.

A Poetic Touch

In a captivating moment, Israel and Mar recited poignant verses that encapsulated the essence of carnival:

El arte es temple y finura. También, morirte de frío.
Pues dijo un amigo mío, que el carnaval no es cultura.
Hay que tenerla muy dura. Es un arte disfrazarte,
cantar, bailar, maquillarte, meterte en un personaje.

Their message resonated: the artistic endeavor of dressing up and the joy of participating in the festivities is what carnival truly embodies. It is a celebration – not just of fun, but of freedom, creativity, and cultural expression.
