Priorities for Fuerteventura’s Port Infrastructure: Insights from Deputy Jana González Alonso
In a recent assembly at the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Jana González Alonso, a deputy representing the Canary Nationalist Group (CCa), passionately highlighted pressing needs in the port network of Fuerteventura. During her address to the Commission of Public Works, Transport, and Housing, she shed light on several key projects that, in her view, demand urgent attention and execution.
Essential Projects for Morro Jable
One of González’s primary concerns is the comprehensive remodeling of the Morro Jable port. This port stands as a vital connection between Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. She voiced the necessity for a holistic planning approach to enhance both functionality and safety. Short-term actions include improving public lighting and renovating the administrative restroom facilities.
In the long run, she advocated for a complete overhaul of the existing dock structure, proposing the demolition of outdated facilities and the modernization of the marina at Jandía. Furthermore, she emphasized the urgent need for an alternative exit road to alleviate traffic congestion in the tourist areas and the urban center.
Corralejo Port Expansion and Environmental Concerns
Regarding the Corralejo port, González insisted on the importance of expanding the port with full environmental guarantees and in collaboration with the La Oliva City Council and the Cabildo. She pointed out that several essential improvements have yet to be implemented, such as the licensing of a café in the passenger terminal, an unmet demand from local authorities.
Enhancing El Cotillo’s Fishing Refuge
Turning to the El Cotillo fishing refuge, González urged the reactivation of a partnership agreement between the Departments of Public Works and Fisheries. This effort aims to enhance the refuge through better asphalt surfacing and improvements to technical services. She noted that the La Oliva City Council is currently investing resources in areas outside its jurisdiction, indicating a pressing need for regional government intervention.
Advancements in Gran Tarajal
In her remarks about Gran Tarajal, González acknowledged the improvements already made but stressed the need for the removal of a dilapidated wooden boat and expedited plans for the port’s extension. She called for transparency regarding project timelines and urged the implementation of protective criteria in the declaration of public interest, voicing her constituents’ frustration over delayed major initiatives.
Giniginamar Coastal Protection
González also shifted attention to Giniginamar, located in Tuineje, where she requested updates on the construction of a coastal breakwater and other essential works aimed at protecting the coastline.
The Future of Puerto del Rosario
Addressing the Puerto del Rosario port, which operates independently from the regional government’s control, González proposed converting allocated funding in the 2025 budgets to establish a direct link for heavy traffic between the commercial port and the motorway. This initiative is part of the municipal General Planning Scheme and is viewed as crucial for improving logistics and transport efficiency.
Recognition of Progress in Port Management
During her speech, González acknowledged the advancements within the regional government regarding port management. She specifically commended Juan Luis López, the Director of Canary Islands Ports, for his proactive approach in addressing the needs across various ports on the island.
González celebrated the increased investment made by the local government in recent times, which has resolved several basic demands, such as improved public lighting in car parks and promenades. However, she firmly insisted that numerous projects still require significant momentum from the concerned departments.
Throughout her speech, Jana González conveyed a collective determination to seize the unique opportunity to elevate the conditions of the Canary Islands’ ports and fishing harbors, specifically in Fuerteventura.
