Jéssica de León: “Events like La Carpa de Fuerteventura help diversify the tourism offering”

Discovering La Carpa: Fuerteventura’s Green Music Festival

On July 29, 2024, key figures in the Canarian tourism sector, including Jéssica de León, the Councillor for Tourism and Employment, visited La Carpa festival in Fuerteventura. Sponsored by Turismo de Islas Canarias, this music festival, running until August 3 at Playa de Sotavento, promises not just great music but also a commitment to environmental sustainability.

A Commitment to Sustainability

During her visit, Councillor de León emphasized the festival’s dedication to environmental stewardship. This year, La Carpa is making strides in energy efficiency, adopting measures to safeguard the natural beauty of the surroundings—a cause championed by the local community and the broader Canarian population.

One of the standout initiatives this year is the festival’s commitment to measuring its carbon footprint using a digital tool provided by Turismo de Islas Canarias. This innovative approach will help the festival identify its emissions, paving the way for future measures aimed at offsetting its carbon impact. De León reiterated that these steps are essential for making La Carpa more sustainable and reducing its environmental effects over the years.

Integrating Culture and Tourism

La Carpa is more than just a music festival; it merges various elements of Canarian life to enrich the tourist experience. De León highlighted how events like La Carpa diversify tourism offerings, blending the renowned sun-and-beach package with cultural, gastronomic, and sporting activities.

Remarkably, La Carpa is integrated into the World Windsurfing and Windfoil Championship, a prestigious event celebrating its 36th year at Playa de Sotavento. This synergy puts Fuerteventura on the map as one of the premier regatta venues worldwide, drawing over 230 athletes from 14 countries, thanks in part to support from the Meliá chain.

Boosting the Local Economy

The economic implications of La Carpa extend well beyond music. The festival prioritizes local businesses, relying almost entirely on Fuerteventura-based companies for its operations. This approach not only supports the local economy but also creates over 150 direct jobs during the 18-day festival period.

To bolster community engagement, de León stated that the Government of the Canary Islands invests more than 14 million euros annually in cultural initiatives like La Carpa. Such investments aim to further stimulate the local economy while promoting cultural vibrancy.

A Model for Future Events

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, the Director General of Order and Tourism Promotion, shared insights on the sustainable organization of the festival. He explained that La Carpa operates under environmental, social, and economic sustainability criteria, focusing on local employment and promoting regional products.

Héctor Mateo, the Director General of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Quality Tourism, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of accommodating both tourists and local residents. “Our goal is to design infrastructures that cater to both visitors and locals,” he noted, solidifying the festival’s commitment to merging tourism with local community welfare.

Challenges and Local Involvement

Organizers like Basi Rodríguez understand the unique challenges presented by a festival of this scale. “La Carpa is one of the most significant events not just for Fuerteventura but for all of the Canary Islands,” he asserted. Notably, 90% of the businesses involved in the festival’s logistics, contracts, and infrastructure are local, ensuring that the economic impact remains within the island.

Rebeca de La Orden from René Egli by Meliá expressed her pride in hosting the 30th anniversary of this world championship, which brings talented competitors from around the globe to Fuerteventura. The intersection of sports and music at this festival highlights the versatile offerings of the Canary Islands.

Innovative Eco-Friendly Initiatives

In addition to measuring its carbon footprint, La Carpa stands out by being the first festival in the Canary Islands to utilize 100% renewable diesel. Artist transportation is also optimized for sustainability, using zero-emission vehicles powered by green hydrogen. Such innovations signal a forward-thinking, eco-conscious approach that may inspire other festivals and events.

A Star-Studded Line-up

Music lovers can look forward to performances from a stellar lineup, including Nicki Nicole, Mestiza, Andruss, and Los Canarios, all set to grace the stage between July 30 and August 1. This blend of prominent artists not only caters to a wide audience but also further establishes La Carpa as a must-visit destination for festival-goers.

As the summer unfolds, La Carpa invites both locals and tourists to join in a celebration of sustainability, community, and music against the picturesque backdrop of Fuerteventura.
