The 36th International Kite Festival of Corralejo: A Celebration of Color and Community
The skies over Fuerteventura are alive with color and vibrancy as the 36th edition of the International Kite Festival of Corralejo gets underway. Taking place from November 10 to 12, this year’s festival has brought together around 210 kite flyers from over 20 countries, including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. This annual gathering not only showcases the artistry of kite flying but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and community engagement.
A Day of Stunning Displays
The festival kicked off with a spectacular exhibition at the Playa de La Concha in El Cotillo, where kite enthusiasts tested the wind conditions amidst clear skies and a welcoming temperature typical of November in Fuerteventura. With winds gusting up to 25 kilometers per hour, kite flyers took the opportunity to display a dazzling array of kites, ranging in size and design. The beach transformed into a canvas of color, featuring both massive static kites and agile acrobatic ones darting through the blue sky.
A Community Affair
Among the spectators were numerous local schoolchildren from CEIP Puerto del Rosario and CEIP El Tostón, alongside members from the Adivia Association. The event serves not only as entertainment but also as an opportunity for educational outreach and ecological awareness. Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva, articulated the festival’s commitment to environmental preservation, emphasizing its role as a hallmark of local culture. He remarked on the harmonious relationship between tourism and environmental stewardship, ensuring that “the festival will continue to thrive for future generations.”
Supporting Local Tourism and Sustainability
Local government representatives, including David Fajardo, the Councillor for Tourism and Environment, and Gleiber Carreño, the Councillor for Sports and Youth, were present to underscore the festival’s significance. Fajardo highlighted that the event encapsulates the best of La Oliva—golden sands, spectacular climate, and a commitment to biodiversity. This festival is not just a display of kites; it’s an embodiment of the community’s dedication to sustainable tourism.
In line with this focus, special measures have been implemented to protect the Dunes of Corralejo, a natural area of great ecological importance. Attendees are provided with guidance on pathways to follow, ensuring minimal disruption to the local flora while they enjoy the festivities. An additional benefit has been the introduction of a dedicated transportation service, facilitating access to the event while safeguarding the environment.
The Upcoming Highlights of the Festival
As the festival progresses into the weekend, excitement builds for the inaugural flight event scheduled for Friday at 10:00 AM at the Las Grandes Playas of Corralejo. This location, chosen for the second consecutive year due to its success in the previous edition, promises to be a thrilling venue for both participants and spectators alike.
The festival not only showcases the creativity and skill of kite flyers but also fosters a sense of unity among communities. It’s a time for families, friends, and visitors to come together, creating lasting memories against the backdrop of Fuerteventura’s stunning natural beauty.
Join the celebration, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, and witness a spectacular array of kites filling the sky—an event that beautifully combines art, culture, and environmental awareness.
