The Colorful Skies of Fuerteventura: The 38th International Kite Festival in Corralejo

Las cometas are once again gracing the skies of Fuerteventura, as vibrant colors dance against the azure backdrop. The picturesque beaches of La Oliva have rolled out the welcome mat for over 200 kite enthusiasts who have arrived from various corners of Europe to partake in the 38th edition of the International Kite Festival in Corralejo. With perfect wind conditions and warm temperatures, the first day of flying is shaping up to be spectacular.

Windy Beginnings at Playa de La Concha

On the inaugural day of the festival, kite flyers took to the air, filling the sky with unique and imaginative designs at Playa de La Concha, in El Cotillo. Wind gusts reaching speeds of 35 kilometers per hour offered ideal conditions for kites of all shapes and sizes, from petite, colorful fish to magical spirals extending over 15 meters long. The scene became a mesmerizing aerial display by the sea, showcasing the islands’ stature as a premier destination for kite festivals across Europe. Starting Friday, the festivities will shift to the expansive beaches of Corralejo.

Local Officials Join the Celebration

Officials from the local government, including Mayor Isaí Blanco and Tourism and Environment Councillor David Fajardo, were present to witness the event. Accompanying them were other council members, such as Omaira Saavedra from Education and Festivities and Verónica Saavedra from Parks and Green Spaces. Mayor Blanco expressed his pride in the number of participants this year, noting, “Each year we take another step forward. This image is not only a representation of La Oliva and Fuerteventura but all of the Canary Islands. While most countries in Europe are facing cold weather, we offer this image of blue skies by the sea, strengthening our reputation as a winter destination.”

Environmental Considerations and Community Involvement

David Fajardo emphasized the festival’s commitment to environmental respect, saying it is “part of the essence” of the event. Environmental guides are on hand to educate attendees about the values of the Dunes of Corralejo, ensuring that visitors enjoy the natural beauty responsibly. Organizers have also implemented shuttle services to reduce traffic congestion and have set up eco-friendly restrooms.

Moreover, local schools are engaging with the festival, with over a hundred students from CEIP El Tostón, La Oliva, participating joyfully by trying to catch flying kites and watching the grander displays.
