La Playa de La Concha, located in El Cotillo, will transform this weekend into a vibrant hub of celebration as it hosts the Fuerteventura en Música (FEM). This year marks a significant milestone—the festival celebrates its twentieth edition, firmly establishing itself as a cultural cornerstone in the Canary Islands.
On Thursday, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, along with the culture councilor Rayco León and representatives from La Oliva Town Hall, visited the festival site. They were joined by participating artists and community groups to finalize preparations ahead of the event.
Two Decades of Music and Diversity
Lola García noted that the FEM has succeeded in maintaining its essence over these twenty editions, continuing to serve as a communal space where cultures converge through music. This not only highlights Fuerteventura’s cultural diversity but also promotes solidarity among its inhabitants.
Rayco León emphasized the festival’s commitment to quality and diversity in its programming, which features both national and international artists. This year’s lineup is particularly exciting as it showcases local talent alongside established musicians, ensuring that the festival remains an authentic representation of the region’s vibrant arts scene.
Juan José Rodríguez, the local councilor for economics at La Oliva, praised the collaborative efforts between the Cabildo and the town hall in organizing the festival. He highlighted the enhanced security measures implemented this year, including a larger police presence, an advanced command post, and additional surveillance cameras, ensuring a safe environment for all attendees.
A Tribute to Dania Dévora
This year, the festival will pay homage to Dania Dévora, recognized as the founder and driving force behind FEM. The Cabildo honors her significant contributions to creating a festival that emphasizes musical diversity, sustainability, and respect for the natural environment. Her tireless efforts have positioned the FEM as a model for cultural festivals across the region.
Schedule for Friday and Saturday
The music kicks off on Friday, July 3, featuring an array of performances including Marta Umpiérrez, Chanela Clicka, La Sra. Tomasa, Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, and Eskorzo. To keep the energy flowing between acts, DJ Woodhands will facilitate the transitions and wrap up the evening with a closing set.
Saturday, July 4, promises an equally diverse lineup with artists such as Arife, Queralt Lahoz, Kumbia Boruka, Antonio Carmona, and Pongo taking to the stage. Once again, DJ Woodhands will lend his talents to maintain the lively atmosphere throughout the day.
The FEM Experience Expands into the Streets
In addition to the main festival events, there will be a continuation of the FEM de Día initiative, organized by Cotillo Joven. This program aims to animate the streets of El Cotillo with workshops and musical performances that invite broader community participation.
Among those contributing to this vibrant street atmosphere are artists like Papaya Subtropical, Naby Zana Band, Hey Chabón, Chocolate Sexy, the Fuerteventura Association of African Percussion, and the batucada group Corumba. With all these activities, this year’s FEM is set to be an unforgettable celebration of music and cultural exchange.
