La Oliva Launches First Community Energy Projects in Fuerteventura
The Ayuntamiento de La Oliva has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the launch of Fuerteventura’s first two community energy projects. These initiatives involve the activation of solar installations equipped with batteries in the Estrella del Atlántico residential complex in El Cotillo and the Serenada community in Corralejo. This pioneering endeavor is set to transform how energy is produced and consumed in the region.
Benefits of Solar Energy Storage
According to the local council, these installations will enable residents to store renewable energy, drastically cutting their electricity bills by approximately €35,000 annually. This financial relief is a welcome development for residents grappling with high energy costs. The solar panels in El Cotillo specifically cater to 17 households, while the Corralejo community supports 85 properties, including shared spaces and a nearby pharmacy.
Shared Energy for Greater Efficiency
One of the most innovative aspects of these projects is the ability for users who generate excess energy to share it with others within a five-kilometer radius. This communal approach promotes not just individual savings, but also fosters a sense of community among participants. It underscores an essential shift in energy consumption—one where collaboration and sharing are key components.
Collaboration with Local and Educational Entities
The successful development of these energy plants is a result of nearly a year of collaborative efforts among the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, property communities in the region, and EnergyRIS, a spin-off company from the Universidad de La Laguna. This partnership reflects a progressive model for creating community energy solutions under the brand name Compartiendo Verde (Sharing Green).
Leadership’s Vision for Energy Independence
Mayor Isaí Blanco expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, noting that it represents “a new way of producing and consuming energy” that thrives on citizen engagement, corporate partnership, and public sector support. He emphasized that this project is part of a broader goal to lessen dependence on fossil fuels and promote a more sustainable energy future.

The President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of local governments in reinforcing the region’s commitment to a true energy transition that supports self-consumption. David Fajardo, the councilor for Tourism and Environment, highlighted this initiative as a crucial step forward in renewable energy implementation within La Oliva. EnergyRIS’s strategic director, Ricardo Guerrero, announced ongoing support for the development of La Oliva’s energy community. He revealed plans to formalize an agreement with the Estrella del Atlántico property community, which will serve as a demonstration project, helping other communities interested in collective self-consumption with energy storage.
Funding from Next Generation EU
Both energy initiatives are funded through the Next Generation EU program, administered by the Government of the Canary Islands. This financial backing is part of a larger strategy to promote renewable energy sources and collective self-consumption, showcasing the region’s commitment to a sustainable future.
