Celebrating the Día de Canarias in La Oliva: A Cultural Extravaganza
El Ayuntamiento de La Oliva is gearing up to celebrate the Día de Canarias with an exciting and diverse program that runs from May 19 to May 30. Spearheaded by the Concejalía de Comercio, led by Alexandra Martín, alongside the Concejalía de Cultura, managed by David Hernández, the municipality is set to offer a range of activities that highlight the rich Canarian culture and heritage.
Culture at the Heart of Los Lajares
One of the most anticipated aspects of the celebration is the specially designed cultural program taking place in Los Lajares from May 19 to May 24. This initiative aims to celebrate and preserve Canarian traditions, heritage, and identity. During this week, families can participate in various activities including workshops, lectures, games, and traditional pastimes that guarantee a deep dive into Canarian culture. A standout feature is the traditional dress workshop, where participants will receive guidance on how to wear traditional clothing, including tips on scarf placement and style.
Culinary and Sporting Events
As part of the programming, the first-ever “I Chef Master” of the Canary Islands is set to take place alongside the Campeonato de Canarias en Edad Escolar and the Torneo de la Amistad Amigos de la Bola Canaria. These events promise to bring together the local community in a spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie. Adding to the festive atmosphere, there will be a live concert featuring “Atlantic Sounds” by Olga Cerpa & Mestisay on the evening of May 23.
A Grand Finale in Los Lajares
The celebration culminates on Saturday, May 24, with an artisan market that runs from 10 AM until midnight. Titled “No olvides lo nuestro,” this event is part of a broader initiative by the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura aimed at preserving local customs. Attendees can enjoy goat milking demonstrations, children’s performances featuring traditional music, and an exciting “Baile Popular Canario,” which will include performances by folk groups and local ensembles. The participation of community members continues to enhance the event, allowing tradition to flourish across various municipalities year after year.
Commercial Highlights in Corralejo
Transitioning from culture to commerce, the Concejalía de Comercio will launch the “Semana de Canarias Enyesque Comercial en Corralejo” from May 26 to May 30. This vibrant event, held along Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen, will host a Canarian gastro-artisanal market, showcasing local culinary delights. Attendees can look forward to musical performances, live cooking demonstrations, and the chance to engage in captivating talks and workshops. As an added incentive, there’s a new campaign called “La Ruleta del Tenderete,” which will distribute 4,000 euros in prizes to customers supporting local businesses.
In a special highlight, El Cotillo will host a gastronomy workshop focused on one of the island’s hallmark products—goat meat—on May 28. This initiative underscores the local commitment to promote and preserve traditional Canarian cuisine.
Community-Oriented Approach
El alcalde de La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, remarked, “Each year, we clearly express our intention to foster the celebration of the Día de Canarias. Our goal is to promote tradition, hospitality, and the pride of our people—who we were and continue to be. We proudly support our culture through commercial dynamization, gastronomy, and backing our folklorists, producers, cooks, and merchants during this celebratory period.”
Echoing this sentiment, Concejal de Comercio, Alexandra Martín, emphasized the importance of uniting tradition, gastronomy, commerce, and community engagement through a week that showcases all that Canarian identity embodies. This event aims to breathe life back into the streets and foster connections among different sectors.
Preserving Traditions for Future Generations
Cultural Councilor David Hernández highlighted the significance of continuing the promotion of Canarian traditions, stating, “It is crucial for us to keep sharing our culture and the unique aspects of our identity. Through folklore, dance, and gastronomy, we will complete our cultural program with a special event like the Baile de Taifas in Lajares on May 24.”
Additionally, the celebrations are backed by the Concejalía de Educación, helmed by Omaira Saavedra, which integrates workshops focused on Canarian activities in local schools—showcasing the municipality’s commitment to the Día de Canarias and enriching the cultural landscape for residents and visitors alike.
