The Northern Municipality Champions Local Products and Gastronomic Talent in Fuerteventura
On January 26, the City Council of La Oliva participated in Madrid Fusión, showcasing the richness of local gastronomy alongside Chef Borja Cabrera from Restaurante El Horno. This event, renowned in the culinary world, served as an excellent platform for the municipality to present its culinary identity and economic potential. The institutional representation included Mayor Isai Blanco Marrero and Councilor for Commerce, Alexandra Martín, who strongly supported the initiative as part of a broader commitment to local heritage and economic development.
Chef Borja Cabrera featured a menu that paid homage to traditional Fuerteventura flavors while reinterpreting them through a modern lens. The offerings included a starter of gofio escaldado, a main course of goat stew (estofado de cabra majorera), and a dessert of gofio mousse. Each dish highlighted the distinctive products emblematic of the island’s culinary landscape, demonstrating how tradition can blend harmoniously with innovation.
Mayor Isai Blanco emphasized that “supporting our restaurants and chefs is crucial for driving local economic growth. El Horno exemplifies how traditional cuisine can evolve while maintaining its essence, bringing the flavors of La Oliva to national and international audiences.” His vision underscores how gastronomy can become a significant economic driver while preserving cultural identity.
Meanwhile, Councilor Marlene Figueroa pointed out that “gastronomy is a key tool for promoting tourism in Fuerteventura. Being present at events of this magnitude allows us to showcase our local products, such as the majorero goat and gofio, and strengthen the island’s image as a quality gastronomic destination.” This strategic approach highlights the essential connection between culinary excellence and tourism, vital for the local economy.
Councilor Alexandra Martín noted, “La Oliva’s presence at Madrid Fusión represents a unique opportunity to promote our gastronomy and the remarkable level of professionals we have in the municipality. Supporting Borja Cabrera and a representative restaurant like El Horno means advocating for our traditions and nurturing the talent of young majorerro chefs.” Such recognition amplifies the importance of culinary arts in establishing a vibrant community identity.
With its engagement in Madrid Fusión 2026, the City Council of La Oliva and the Tourism Board reaffirm their commitment to promoting local cuisine, emphasizing farm-to-table products and supporting young talent as core aspects of the municipality’s identity. The collaboration between culinary innovation, tourism, and local ingredients presents a promising avenue for enhancing Fuerteventura’s cultural footprint on the global stage, making it an unforgettable destination for food enthusiasts.
