Lidl Expands Its Footprint in the Canary Islands with a New Logistics Platform and Stores

Lidl, the renowned German supermarket chain, is making waves in the Canary Islands with its recent expansion, which includes the launch of a second logistics platform and the opening of two new stores. This strategic move not only strengthens Lidl’s presence in the archipelago but also enhances its delivery capabilities to meet the growing demand for affordable grocery options among the local population.

The New Logistics Hub in Agüimes

Located in Agüimes on Gran Canaria, Lidl’s new logistics facility began operations in mid-2020. Spanning over 25,000 square meters, this state-of-the-art distribution center can accommodate up to 21,000 pallets of goods. This significant investment underscores Lidl’s commitment to improving its supply chain efficiency, ensuring that their products reach store shelves promptly and in excellent condition.

The establishment of this logistics hub fits seamlessly into Lidl’s broader strategy of enhancing operational efficiencies while delivering value to customers. With a reliable supply chain, Lidl can maintain freshness and variety in its offerings, ensuring that shoppers have access to the products they love.

New Store Openings: Antigua and Melenara

To complement the expansion of its logistics capacity, Lidl recently inaugurated new stores in Antigua on Fuerteventura and Melenara on Gran Canaria. These openings are part of a larger plan to broaden Lidl’s reach across the islands, making it easier for residents to access high-quality groceries at affordable prices.

In addition to these new locations, Lidl has also expanded parking facilities at its store in Güímar, Tenerife, ensuring a more convenient shopping experience for customers. This focus on improving accessibility and customer satisfaction is central to Lidl’s approach as it continues to grow in the region.

Upcoming Stores in 2021

Looking ahead, Lidl has exciting plans for 2021, with the announcement of two additional stores in Tamaraceite (Gran Canaria) and Corralejo (Fuerteventura). These new establishments will further solidify Lidl’s presence in the Canaries, bringing its total number of stores in the region to over 30. This expansion is indicative of Lidl’s ongoing investment in the Canary Islands, where it has been operating for over a decade.

Employment and Local Partnerships

Lidl’s growth in the Canary Islands is not just about expanding retail spaces. The company currently employs over 1,000 individuals, contributing significantly to the local economy. Moreover, Lidl maintains close working relationships with around 100 local suppliers, fostering community ties and promoting economic development within the region.

One notable initiative is Lidl’s “Compro Canario” label, which highlights over 700 local products offered in its stores. This commitment to supporting local businesses and sourcing regional products aligns with Lidl’s mission to promote sustainability and community engagement.

The Bigger Picture

As a subsidiary of Lidl Stiftung, which also includes the hypermarket chain Kaufland, Lidl operates within the larger framework of the Schwarz Group. The Schwarz Group is recognized as the fourth-largest operator in food distribution globally. With more than 11,200 stores and approximately 200 logistics centers in about 30 countries, Lidl has established itself as the leading supermarket chain in Europe.

The company serves a workforce of over 310,000 employees worldwide, highlighting its role as a significant player in the global retail landscape. For customers in the Canary Islands, Lidl’s combination of affordability and quality offers an attractive shopping alternative.

Through its ongoing investments and local initiatives, Lidl not only enhances the shopping experience for residents of the Canary Islands but also plays a vital role in bolstering the local economy and community well-being. This commitment to growth and community connection sets Lidl apart as a favorite among regional shoppers.
