Little Barcelona, a restaurant co-owned by Lorna Thain Segú and Marc Gómez Segú, recently received the prestigious “Restaurants from Spain” designation from the Spanish government. This accolade is not just a title; it signifies a commitment to authenticity and excellence in Spanish gastronomy.

The Dream That Sparked a Culinary Adventure

The story of Little Barcelona began with a dream shared by Lorna and Marc during their time in Spain. “We talked about it when we were living in Spain. I remember our walks along the beach in Castelldefels,” Lorna reminisced. Their vision of owning a Spanish restaurant remained a distant aspiration until it became a reality just over two years ago. The couple’s passion for Spanish cuisine and culture fueled their determination to bring a piece of Spain back to Canada.

From Passion Project to Culinary Destination

Little Barcelona was born out of a desire to share authentic Spanish flavors with the local community. “Our slogan is the authentic Spanish cuisine without the plane ticket,” Lorna explained. Before opening the restaurant, the couple started an import and distribution business focused on high-end Spanish foods across Canada. However, the pandemic forced them to pivot quickly.

“When the pandemic hit, we went from doing well to zero overnight,” Lorna recalled. Faced with uncertainty, Marc encouraged Lorna to embrace their dream. “We have a dream and we’ve got a lot of food,” he said, leading them to launch a small takeout operation as a pilot project.

Achieving Recognition for Authenticity

The “Restaurants from Spain” certification is awarded to establishments that demonstrate exceptional authenticity in Spanish cuisine and products. With over 550 restaurants recognized globally, including just ten in Canada, this certification is a testament to Little Barcelona’s commitment to quality. The couple was overwhelmed with emotion during the recognition ceremony, where Spain’s ambassador to Canada, Alfredo Martinez, presented the certification plaque.

“This means the recognition of the highest standards of quality and contribution to wider spreading Spanish gastronomy in Canada,” Martinez stated, highlighting the significance of the award.

A Personal Journey of Cultural Integration

Marc’s journey to Canada is a story of resilience and adaptation. Originally from Barcelona, he immigrated to Canada 13 years ago, facing the challenges of cultural shock and language barriers. “For me, this is like a dream come true. A nice big milestone for me,” he shared, reflecting on the significance of their achievement. Being the only Spanish restaurant in the countryside adds a special layer to their story, making it a unique destination for those seeking authentic Spanish cuisine.

Community Recognition and Support

Local leaders have also recognized the impact of Little Barcelona on the region. Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, praised the restaurant as a tourism attraction that prioritizes authenticity. “It validates that they’re not just a restaurant; they’re a tourism attraction that always puts their heritage first,” he remarked.

A Royal Invitation

As part of their prestigious recognition, Lorna and Marc will attend a special ceremony with Spanish royalty. “The owners of Little Barcelona will be with His Majesty, celebrating this people-to-people tie through gastronomy and food,” Martinez noted. The opportunity to meet the King is a rare honor, adding to the couple’s already remarkable journey.

Little Barcelona is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of culture, love, and culinary artistry. The couple has poured their hearts into creating an experience that transports guests to Spain, all while fostering a sense of community in Prescott. Their story is a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and the universal language of food.
