Celebrating Craftsmanship: The XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura 2023

A Cultural Showcase in Antigua

El Portón de Antigua recently played host to an exciting press event marking the launch of the XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura 2023. Prominent figures gathered to announce the event, including the mayor, Matías Peña García, and representatives from the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, such as Bárbara Évora. The occasion was further enhanced by the presence of Sergio Lloret, president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, and the esteemed María Hernández Hernández, the 2023 Insular Craftsmanship Award recipient, renowned for her expertise in palm weaving.

A Hub for Artisans Across the Canaries

Bárbara Évora shared exciting details about the event, revealing that a grand total of 200 stands are being set up to accommodate over 150 artisans from across the Canary Islands. Unfortunately, artisans from El Hierro were unable to attend due to a last-minute personal issue. Évora emphasized the crisis facing traditional crafts and issued a heartfelt appeal to institutions regarding the urgent need to promote these time-honored skills. She voiced concerns about the potential extinction of some craft forms that critically represent the culture of the islands.

A Show of Support from Local Authorities

Mayor Matías Peña García underscored the significance of featuring artisan María Hernández at this event. Despite personal challenges, her commitment to the fair highlights the strength and resilience of the crafting community. He expressed gratitude to all involved in organizing the event, which had been a six-month collaborative effort aimed at showcasing the highest standards of craftsmanship. The mayor noted that the fair stands as a flagship event for the Municipality of Antigua, representing a blend of quality, tradition, and innovation in the artisan sector.

Financial Commitment to the Craft

The Ayuntamiento de Antigua has allocated a remarkable budget of €220,000 for the organization of the Feria Insular de Artesanía. This investment represents the largest funding dedicated to the fair yet and aims to ensure the utmost comfort for artisans and to facilitate engaging activities for all visitors. In addition, the fair will feature two designated areas: one for public institutions and another focused on showcasing local food products.

Growing Support from Government Officials

Sergio Lloret, president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, also weighed in on the importance of the fair. He highlighted its role as a vital support system for artisans, helping them boost their sales and enhance their visibility. Lloret disclosed that, in addition to perennial funding of €40,000 for the event, this year would see that amount increase to €50,000, signifying a stronger commitment to the artistic community and the value of the fair.

A Festival for All

The XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura 2023 promises to be a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship, bringing together artisans and the community. With a wealth of talent on display, engaging activities planned, and a collaborative spirit permeating the event, it serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Canary Islands and the importance of preserving traditional arts.
