Neighbors and Business Owners of Caleta de Fuste Give the New Government of Antigua a Chance: “We’ll Wait and See”

Community Initiative Response to Recent Local Government Changes

In a recent meeting held at the Elba Carlota Hotel, Roberta Cipollini, the spokesperson for a local citizen initiative, provided insights into the community’s concerns and aspirations. As a neighbor and entrepreneur, Cipollini emphasized the significance of the gathering, which brought together residents, representatives from AECA, and various associations from the municipality to discuss pressing issues regarding local governance and community safety.

Gathering Crucial Data

During the meeting, Cipollini presented valuable data collected in collaboration with AECA and local representatives over the past months. This information focused on the municipal budget for 2026, specifically addressing how investments in the area are prioritized. She explained, “These are data collected about the municipal budget for the year 2026 and the current situation we have had in the area. How much is invested here, what the investment is for, and what priority is given to this zone.”

Impact of Government Changes

The unexpected change in local governance, which happened just hours prior to the meeting, prompted the attending community groups to reconsider their mobilization plans. Cipollini noted the palpable sense of anticipation among community members, stating, “What we observed today is that people are waiting, and we too want to wait, because a motion of censure has just passed against the former mayor, Mr. Matías Peña. We will see what happens with the new government taking charge.”

Reflecting on the situation, Cipollini said that the collective decision was to take a “pause, in quotes,” allowing them time to assess developments over the next nine to ten months.

Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety

Despite the decision to observe a collective pause, Cipollini reaffirmed her personal commitment to issues that directly impact local residents, particularly safety concerns in Caleta de Fuste and the notable deterioration of Caleta Garden. She stated, “The only thing I can continue to say, and I say it in the first person, is that I will remain committed as a community representative to the safety in Caleta de Fuste, Caleta Garden, which is a very serious problem, as well as the safety and cleanliness in our area.”

Cipollini’s ongoing efforts include a petition on change.org titled “We want more safety in Caleta,” which remains active as she continues to advocate for necessary changes.

The New Municipal Government Ahead

With less than a year until the 2027 elections, the newly installed municipal government faces the challenge of addressing long-standing concerns brought forth during the community meeting. Key issues include public safety, local police resources, cleanliness, infrastructure, and essential public services. Notably, two of the four reasons cited during the recent council session for the motion of censure were the government’s failure to effectively tackle public security concerns and delays in investments from other authorities.

Key Responsibilities of the New Administration

The division of responsibilities within the new government assigns vital portfolios such as Security and Urban Development to Coalición Canaria, while the PP (Partido Popular) takes on Tourism and Contigo manages Cleanliness. These areas are crucial for addressing the specific demands raised by residents and business owners during the community meeting.

Community Vigilance and Expectations

Both AECA and the resident groups have decided to adopt a cautious approach of observation but remain ready to act if necessary. Echoing Cipollini’s sentiments, they have collectively agreed to wait and see how the new government plans to tackle these issues, but they remain vigilant. The active collection of data and a readiness to mobilize support for their cause will continue as the new administration sets its agenda.

The expectation from community members is clear: proactive monitoring and advocacy will prevail to ensure their voices are heard, and their needs addressed in a timely manner.
