Enhancing Connectivity: Improvements at Corralejo Port by Nueva Canarias
Nueva Canarias has recently expressed positive sentiments regarding the improvement works underway at the Corralejo Port, a critical infrastructure for the connectivity and economic activities of Fuerteventura and the entire Canary archipelago. The continued development of such ports is essential for the region’s growth and sustainability.
Advocacy for Infrastructure Upgrades
Sonia Álamo, the spokesperson for Nueva Canarias in the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, reminded the public that her party previously championed this initiative during the Cabildo Plenary held in October 2023. They introduced a motion advocating for the improvement of services and infrastructure at the port. This proposal gained traction after incorporating an amendment to also focus on enhancements at the ports of Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable.
Corralejo: A Strategic Infrastructure
Highlighting the significance of the Corralejo Port, Nueva Canarias points out its status as the second busiest port in the Canary Islands. Álamo emphasized that the initiative for improvement arose from longstanding deficiencies in the port facilities. The group’s primary aim is to bolster the services and better the conditions at the port, while discussions related to potential expansions remain secondary.
Álamo stated, “These are distinct debates. We have consistently stressed the urgent need to implement improvements at this essential infrastructure for mobility, economic activity, and the overall image of Corralejo.”
Continuity Across Other Ports
The movement for improvements is seen as a welcome development among locals, workers, and users of the port who rely on this infrastructure for their daily activities. However, Nueva Canarias cautions against limiting this crucial investment solely to the Corralejo Port. Álamo reminded the community that the approved motion in the Cabildo also recognized the need for interventions at the ports of Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable, which suffer from similar maintenance issues.
Specific shortcomings include deficiencies in security, surveillance, and overall maintenance of these installations, further emphasizing the need for action.
“We’re pleased that action is being taken in Corralejo because it was essential and addresses a real demand. However, this progress must extend to Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable, which equally require investments and upgrades to their services and infrastructures,” Álamo declared.
A Vision for Modernization
Nueva Canarias argues that public administrations must maintain a consistent investment strategy for the ports of Fuerteventura to ensure longevity and modernization. The group stresses that the ports play a vital role in the connectivity of the island, facilitating movement for residents and tourists while driving economic development. Adequate, secure, and well-adapted facilities are necessary for the ports to function effectively within the broader Canary Island port system.
As they continue advocating for necessary enhancements, Nueva Canarias looks forward to seeing the future improvements in Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable addressed with the same commitment that is currently evident in the Corralejo developments.
