Ongoing Intercity Transport Strike in Las Palmas Province

On September 16, the intercity transport strike initiated in the province of Las Palmas continues to disrupt services in Fuerteventura, with partial stoppages affecting numerous routes. The workers in this sector are advocating for improved labor conditions and a fair provincial agreement, which has prompted widespread mobilizations also impacting Lanzarote, and soon to extend to Gran Canaria on September 17.

Current Situation in Fuerteventura

In Fuerteventura, the strike is being implemented with minimum service levels at 70% during designated hours. These are split into two timeframes: from 06:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. The aim of maintaining these minimum services is to ensure the public’s right to mobility, especially on high-demand transport routes.

Service Navigation and Planning

Passengers are encouraged to check the full service hours at bus stops or on the official operator’s website. Given the restrictions and the nature of the strike, it’s advisable for users to plan their travel meticulously, especially during hours outside of the minimum service coverage.

Growth of the Strike

The strike commenced on September 15 in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with Gran Canaria set to join the following day. Notably, there are currently no designated minimum services in Gran Canaria, which poses potential challenges for commuters relying on intercity transport.

Ongoing Negotiations

The negotiation table remains active, involving trade unions, employers, and government representatives. However, if a consensus is not reached soon, the strike is likely to extend, further impacting intercity transport in the islands.

This ongoing civil action underscores the pressing need for fair labor practices in the transport sector, reflecting broader social dynamics within the region. The collaborative efforts by workers to advocate for their rights illustrate the vital role labor rights play in ensuring safe, fair working environments for all.
