Over 40 Activities to Celebrate a ‘100% Canaries May’ in Fuerteventura

Celebrating Our Roots: ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ in Fuerteventura

The island of Fuerteventura is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of its culture and heritage with the launch of the ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ program. Organized by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura through its Cultural Department, this initiative promises over forty events, activities, and performances that cater to a wide audience. President of the Cabildo, Lola García, emphasized that this program is designed to celebrate and showcase the essence of Canarian identity, traditions, artistic expressions, and cultural diversity.

A Diverse Array of Activities

The ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ programming encompasses a rich tapestry of events, touching on various disciplines such as music, dance, theatre, exhibitions, literature, and conferences focused on Canarian identity. Scheduled throughout May, the events are organized across multiple cultural services, including Cultural Heritage, the Insular Library Center, the Juan Ismael Art Center, and the Fuerteventura Museums. Additionally, the initiative enjoys support from the Government of the Canary Islands, enhancing its reach and impact.

Honoring Identity and Traditions

Lola García articulated the vision behind this programming beautifully: “We celebrate Canarias from who we are — from our identity and traditions and our understanding of this land.” This sentiment resonates deeply with community members, reinforcing a sense of belonging and cultural pride.

Rayco León, the Cultural Counselor, also underlined the importance of showcasing Canarian identity in all its forms. He believes that it’s essential not just to focus on traditional aspects but also to incorporate modern interpretations, offering activities that engage all audiences. This comprehensive approach ensures that the rich Canarian culture is highlighted through both established practices and innovative expressions.

Heritage with a Modern Twist

A significant component of the programming connects to the island’s heritage. The project ‘El Alma de la Isla’ offers theatrical routes that explore and communicate the island’s cultural values. One of the unique highlights is an informative talk aimed at engaging community members in the participatory process for the renovation and utilization of the Casas de La Florida, a historical site of importance.

From the 18th to the 28th of May, the island will also host traditional dance workshops in collaboration with local dance groups like A.F. Maxorata in Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal. These workshops aim to immerse attendees in the traditional dances of the islands, enriching participants’ understanding of their cultural heritage.

Engaging Young Minds

The programming doesn’t stop at adults; there are plenty of activities designed to engage younger audiences as well. The Juan Ismael Art Center will feature exciting exhibitions, and the Insular Bibliographic Center will host storytelling sessions. In partnership with the Fuerteventura Museums, activities will include educational excursions for schoolchildren, allowing them to connect with elements of Canarian identity through visits to various historical sites such as the Batallas del Cuchillete Interpretation Center, the Atalayita settlement, and the La Alcogida Ecomuseum. Notably, these activities coincide with the International Museum Day on May 18, aiming to foster knowledge and involvement among the youth.

Rayco León expressed gratitude to the Government of the Canary Islands for its collaboration, highlighted by initiatives like “Somos Patrimonio de Canarias” and the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development. These partnerships have enabled productions like the theatrical works Siete Estrellas Verdes and La Casa de Bernarda Alba, alongside musical performances featuring celebrated groups such as Los Sabandeños, Olga Cerpa, and Mestisay.

Grand Finale: The Gran Baile de Taifas

Capping off the month-long celebration will be one of the most anticipated events: the Gran Baile de Taifas, scheduled for May 29 at the fairgrounds in Puerto del Rosario. This lively gathering promises performances from groups across Fuerteventura and the other Canary Islands, including a clothing exhibition and competition. Those interested in attending can reserve tables starting May 11 at 5:00 PM, ensuring a front-row seat to this grand celebration of Canarian culture.

As Fuerteventura prepares for May to become a month of cultural exploration and celebration, the ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ program invites everyone—residents and visitors alike—to engage with the vibrant traditions and modern expressions that define the unique identity of these islands.
