Celebrating Diversity: The Intercultural Week of the DIMBE Women’s Association

The Asociación Sociocultural de Mujeres Mauritanas DIMBE is set to host its vibrant Intercultural Week from July 22 to July 25 in Puerto del Rosario, thanks to the generous support of local institutions including the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario, and Cajamar. This annual celebration aims to promote understanding and interaction among various cultures, offering a tapestry of activities accessible to everyone in the community.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

The Intercultural Week organized by DIMBE is envisioned as a vital space for bringing together diverse cultures. It features a diverse program that includes conferences, dialogue tables, cultural activities, sporting events, music performances, and a gastronomic showcase. The overarching aim is to foster community coexistence, respect for diversity, and active participation from all citizens.

Lola García, President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, emphasized the island’s character as an “open, diverse, and welcoming place” where individuals from various backgrounds come together to build a richer society. Initiatives like the Intercultural Week, according to García, play a crucial role in enhancing this coexistence by facilitating mutual understanding, respect, and cultural dialogue.

Likewise, David de Vera, Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, acknowledged the week as a reflection of the municipality’s and the entire island’s cultural richness. Hawa Touré, President of DIMBE, articulated the inspiration behind the Intercultural Week as a response to the pressing need for creating environments that enhance relationships among the islands’ varied communities. The event’s presentation saw participation from notable figures, including Nuria Cabrera, the Councillor for Finance, Economic Promotion, and Employment, along with Carmen Cabrera representing Cajamar.

The Intercultural Week will kick off on July 22 with a thought-provoking conference titled “Between Two Shores: Mauritania and the Canary Islands – A Bridge of Coexistence, Integration, and Cooperation.” This session will delve into the rich historical, social, and environmental connections between the two regions.

The subsequent days will be filled with diverse activities focusing on cultural heritage, youth engagement, and equality initiatives. Significant discussions will center on human rights topics, including raising awareness about the need to eradicate female genital mutilation. The event will culminate with a festivity celebrating sports, music, and gastronomy, showcasing how these elements can promote intercultural understanding.

Addressing Social Issues

A key focus of the programming is on urgent social issues, such as cooperation between the Canary Islands and Africa, human rights advocacy, women’s leadership, and ensuring equal opportunities. The week will reach a crescendo with a friendly encounter between practitioners of traditional Canarian wrestling and Senegalese wrestling, symbolizing the bridge between cultures through the shared values of sportsmanship.
