The Journey of Robynn Hale: From Road Trips to Global Adventures

A Childhood of Exploration

Robynn Hale ’27’s love for travel began in her childhood, during long summer road trips with her father. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, these journeys to visit family in Roanoke, Virginia, spanned nearly 2,500 miles. Each trip was not just a drive; it was an immersive experience where her father shared stories about the history of the United States. “Those road trips became my first classroom,” Hale reflects, emphasizing how those experiences shaped her understanding of the world.

The Spark of Curiosity

Travel has always been a source of inspiration for Hale. The sense of curiosity ignited during those formative years has continued to flourish, influencing her later adventures with her own daughter, who is now six years old. Each trip they take together is an opportunity for discovery and learning, reinforcing the importance of exploration in their lives.

A Prestigious Opportunity

Now, Hale is poised to embark on a new chapter of her journey, thanks to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. State Department. This prestigious award will allow her to immerse herself in a different culture for an entire semester, a transformative opportunity she never imagined would be available to her. “I’m excited. I want to make the most of my time there and find new ways to build community,” she shares, highlighting her eagerness to navigate new spaces and embrace challenges.

Destination: Pamplona, Spain

In the fall, Hale and her daughter will travel to Pamplona, Spain, a city rich in history with its cobblestone streets and 16th-century architecture. This vibrant setting, known for inspiring literary giants like Hemingway, will serve as the backdrop for Hale’s studies at the Public University of Navarra. Here, she plans to hone her Spanish language skills while building cross-cultural connections in local classrooms, further expanding her horizons.

Overcoming Self-Doubt

Despite her excitement, Hale acknowledges the challenges of being a nontraditional student. “Sometimes you have that negative internal dialogue,” she admits, questioning whether it’s crazy to apply for such opportunities. However, her determination to challenge herself and step outside her comfort zone has fueled her journey. “That’s part of what makes this so special to me,” she says, expressing gratitude for the chance to create lasting memories with her daughter.

Support from Roanoke College

Hale discovered the Gilman Scholarship while attending Roanoke College, where she received invaluable mentorship throughout the application process. Faculty members, including Teresa Hancock-Parmer, the Director of Major Scholarships and Fellowships, encouraged her to reflect deeply on her experiences and articulate her goals. This personalized support is something Hale appreciates, noting that it can be harder to find at larger universities or online programs.

The Value of Community

For Hale, the close-knit community at Roanoke College has been instrumental in her academic journey. “I wanted to be in person, and I wanted the smaller classrooms,” she explains. The ability to know her classmates and professors by name has fostered a supportive environment where she feels comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions. This sense of belonging has been crucial for her growth as a student.

Giving Back Through Mentorship

Upon returning from her semester in Pamplona, Hale plans to launch a service project aimed at mentoring local high school students. Her goal is to introduce them to international education opportunities, particularly those who may feel that studying abroad is beyond their reach. “I want them to be able to see themselves in these places and see that they fit,” she emphasizes, aiming to inspire young people to believe in their potential.

The Importance of Self-Belief

Hale’s journey is a testament to the power of self-belief. “You have to bet on yourself,” she advises, reflecting on the lessons she has learned throughout her experiences. Her story serves as an inspiration for others, encouraging them to embrace opportunities and challenge the limitations they may impose on themselves.

Through her travels, studies, and future mentorship, Robynn Hale is not just exploring the world; she is also paving the way for others to do the same.
