Tragic Incident at Playa del Águila: A Day of Rescue and Loss
On Thursday afternoon, a tragic event unfolded at Playa del Águila in El Cotillo, located in the municipality of La Oliva, where two individuals found themselves in distress in the waters. The circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident highlight both the risks associated with ocean swimming and the swift emergency response that follows such accidents.
The Emergency Call
Around 17:20 hours, the local authorities received an urgent alert reporting that two bathers were struggling in the sea. The Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Government quickly initiated emergency procedures, dispatching ambulances, lifeguards, and specialized rescue teams to the scene.
Quick Action by Rescuers
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that one individual managed to free themselves from the water. After receiving medical assistance from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC), they opted to decline further medical transportation to a hospital. The other swimmer, however, remained in critical condition and required immediate rescue.
Rescue professionals from the Grupo de Emergencias y Salvamento (GES) utilized a helicopter to locate and extract the second swimmer from the ocean, showcasing the effectiveness of coordinated emergency operations.

The La Oliva Local Police later provided updates on social media regarding the unfolding situation at Playa de Las Escaleras, the alternate name for the popular beach. As the rescue operations progressed, medical personnel from the Canary Health Service (SCS) were on hand to assist in keeping the swimmers stable.

By the time they were airlifted to a nearby location, the individual was in a state of cardiac arrest, necessitating urgent medical intervention.
