A Splash of Excitement: The XXII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos

This past Sunday, the picturesque coastal town of Corralejo in Fuerteventura played host to a remarkable sporting event: the XXII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos. After a one-year hiatus due to unforeseen circumstances, the event brought together an impressive total of 181 participants from various backgrounds, showcasing the community’s resilience and passion for open-water swimming.

Organizing a Community Event

The event was orchestrated by the CD Herbania and Club Charco Herbania Atlético, demonstrating the power of local organizations in creating memorable experiences. Their collaborative efforts were significantly supported by the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. It wasn’t just another race; it was a community celebration, uniting athletes and spectators alike under the banner of sport and togetherness.

Ideal Conditions for Competition

The weather conditions on the day of the event were nothing short of perfect. With calm seas and clear skies, participants had an exhilarating swim across the 3,400 meters that separate the Isla de Lobos from the Corralejo coastline. The conducive environment allowed many swimmers to achieve impressive personal bests, a testament to the rigorous training and dedication of the athletes.

Standout Performers

As the race kicked off, adrenaline coursed through the veins of every swimmer. The men’s division saw Jorge García Moreno clinching the top spot with a remarkable time of 39:17. He was closely followed by Tomás Carrascosa Hester and David Gonzalez Sánchez, who recorded times of 40:48 and 44:12, respectively. In the women’s division, Ainhoa Santana Flores led, finishing in 46:55, followed by Laura García Cervantes and María Tatiana Mujica González at 53:08 and 54:04, respectively. These times not only reflect skill and determination but also highlight the competitive spirit that characterizes this beloved event.

A Prelude to the IV Copa de Canarias

A pivotal aspect of this year’s race was its designation as the first round of the IV Copa de Canarias de Aguas Abiertas. In this exciting preliminary heat, Alejandro Elvira Glaubitz, representing Club CD Nonadamos, took first place among men with a commendable time of 46:22, while Laura García Cervantes matched his achievement in the women’s category, finishing at 53:08. The addition of this championship layer adds a new dimension of excitement, setting the stage for future competitions and increasing interest in the sport.

Voices from the Organizers

Inma Díaz, the president of Club Deportivo Herbania, expressed immense pride in the event’s success. “It’s gratifying to witness our community come together for such an endeavor without being a professional event organization. Our volunteers, who dedicate their time without any compensation, embody our collective belief that, with willpower, we can encourage both amateur and federated sports. It brings a sense of accomplishment that transcends the race itself.”

Acknowledgment from Local Officials

Jero Lozano, the sports councilor of the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, echoed Díaz’s sentiments, emphasizing the event’s significance. Celebrating its 22nd edition, the Travesía a Nado has firmly established itself as a sports event of tourist interest. He remarked on the enriching relationship between sport and tourism within the municipality, further enhancing La Oliva’s reputation as a vibrant sporting destination. Lozano extended gratitude to CD Herbania for choosing La Oliva as the venue again, underscoring the community’s commitment to showcasing such remarkable events.

As Corralejo welcomed swimmers to its spectacular shores, the combined efforts of local organizations, athletes, and supporters highlighted not only the beauty of the event but also the enduring spirit of sport and companionship within the community. This swimming race wasn’t simply about competition; it was a celebration of determination, camaraderie, and the sheer joy of being part of something greater.
