The 34th Corralejo Kite Fest: A Celebration of Color and Community
This morning, the vibrant and much-anticipated 34th edition of the Corralejo Kite Fest kicked off in Fuerteventura. Held at the picturesque Playa de El Dormidero in La Oliva, this year’s festival opened with an inaugural flight led by the iconic duo Jacinto and Flora, the founders of this beloved event. Their performance paid a heartfelt tribute to the residents affected by the volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, setting a poignant tone for what promises to be a remarkable festival.
Local Leadership and Community Support
The event witnessed notable attendance from local governmental figures, highlighting the community’s enthusiastic support for this colorful celebration. Pilar González, the mayor of La Oliva; Marcelino Umpiérrez, the councilor for Tourism, Commerce, and Gastronomy; and Rafael Benítez, the councilor for Social Welfare, were among the dignitaries present. Additionally, Sergio Lloret, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, along with his tourism advisor Jessica De León, and Mario de la Cruz, the manager of Asofuer, also joined the festivities. This collective representation underscores the festival’s importance as a cultural and community event, bolstered by local governance.
A Flourishing Display of Creativity
As the day progressed, the skies over the beautiful Corralejo Natural Park became a canvas for the artistic expressions of 150 kite flyers. Artists from across Europe—including Germany, Austria, the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and France—as well as participants from Brazil and the United States showcased their imaginative kite designs. Each kite soared through the air, bringing a kaleidoscope of colors to the Fuerteventura skyline, enriching the festival’s experience for attendees.
Engaging the Younger Generation
A particularly enriching aspect of this year’s festival is the involvement of more than 300 local schoolchildren. Students from various educational institutions, including La Oliva, Lajares, Tindaya, and Villaverde, participated in kite-building workshops. This initiative allows younger generations to connect with the art of kite-making and learn about the cultural significance of this event, nurturing a sense of community pride and creativity. Moreover, the festival this year is supplemented by the Wind Festival, featuring a host of additional activities that promise to engage and entertain attendees of all ages.
A Weekend Full of Activities
Festival-goers can look forward to a weekend brimming with excitement, as the skies of Fuerteventura become alive with the vibrant hues of kites. Various workshops are lined up, covering topics like Kite Making, Environmental Interpretation, and Renewable Energies. In addition, enjoy an array of activities from lively parades to musical performances and inflatable castles, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Anticipation for the ‘Rokaku’ Battle
Among the many highlights of the festival are the scheduled demonstration flights set for Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10:00 AM and continuing into the afternoon. One of the most anticipated events will occur on Saturday at 1:00 PM— the dazzling ‘Rokaku’ battle. This thrilling competition showcases the skills of kite flyers in an aerial duel where the strongest kite aims to outmaneuver and outlast its competitors. It’s an event that captures the spirit of sporting challenge, creativity, and community engagement.
Organizers and Support
The Corralejo Kite Fest is organized by the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva with vital support from the Tourism Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Tourism Ministry of the Canary Government. This collaboration exemplifies the collective commitment to fostering cultural and recreational activities that bring the community together while attracting visitors from around the globe.
With a rich blend of color, creativity, and community spirit, the 34th Corralejo Kite Fest promises an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, reinforcing its status as one of the premier kite festivals in the world.
