Marina Jandía: A New Chapter for the 44Cup

The 44Cup Heads to Marina Jandía
Marina Jandía se prepara para recibir a la 44Cup.

As the sun sets on the 2025 season of the RC44 class, all eyes are set on an exciting and novel venue — the 44Cup at Marina Jandía. Located in the southern part of Fuerteventura, this new marina is poised to host teams from across the globe, marking a significant milestone not just for the competitors, but also for the local boating culture.

A New Venue, A New Era

The upcoming 44Cup at Marina Jandía promises to be a turning point, as it replaces the Virgin Islands, where the season kicked off earlier in the year. Despite currently thriving in infrastructure development, Marina Jandía is fully operational and serves as the first major marine facility on the island. The marina boasts over 300 berths, ready to accommodate the ten teams of the RC44 fleet, presenting a captivating image as these high-performance sailing vessels find their home in a marina designed for much larger yachts.

The Windy Playground of Fuerteventura

Daniel Calero, helm of the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team, describes this event as a monumental step for Calero Marinas. Fuerteventura, shaped by the steady trade winds known as the alisios, boasts a noteworthy 37-year history of hosting World Cup events, making it an ideal locale for sailing.

Yet, as Calero candidly notes, “I’m not sure we can consider ourselves locals here. Just like everyone else, we will have to explore the area.” This exploration holds the promise of discovering not just favorable winds but also the island’s breathtaking landscapes.

Unique Racing Conditions

The racecourse layout will provide the principal race official, María Torrijo, ample opportunities to strategize, combining protected areas near Morro Jable with more exposed zones that could present challenges like stronger winds or ocean swells from the Atlantic. Navigating these varying conditions will be critical as competitors vie for the title.

A Boost with a New Crew Member

Adding to the excitement, Calero’s team has recently enlisted Alberto Padrón, the world champion of J/80, as their trimmer for the season’s climax. His experience and skill will undoubtedly be a valuable asset as the team aims for a strong finish.

Meanwhile, Calero is still playfully dealing with the sudden fame that arose after a viral moment when he accidentally fell overboard in Scheveningen. With over a million views online, he recounts with humor, “I’ve received messages from all over. And everyone keeps joking, ‘How was the water, Dani?’” It’s a sign of the close-knit community that sailing fosters, where humor can carry the day even in unexpected situations.

Event Schedule and Expectations

Racing action kicks off on Wednesday, November 19, with a training day to allow teams to familiarize themselves with the new terrain. The competition itself is set to run from November 20 to 23, as sailors battle it out for the coveted 44Cup title that will crown the champions of 2025.

The anticipation is palpable, not just among the participants but also within the local community eagerly awaiting the event. With its picturesque vistas and competitive spirit, Marina Jandía is ready to make waves in the world of sailing.
