The Beaches of Jandía ‘Seduce’ Tourist Merkel

Angela Merkel’s Sunny Escape to Fuerteventura

In March 2023, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband, Professor Joachim Sauer, traded the frosty, harsh winter of Germany for the picturesque beaches of Sotavento in Jandía, located on the stunning island of Fuerteventura. This choice of destination can be seen as a much-deserved retreat, especially considering Merkel’s frequent visits to La Gomera during her political career. Known for its lush landscapes and serene hiking trails, this time, however, she opted for leisurely days soaking up the sun.

Arrival in Fuerteventura

According to reports from Radio Sintonía, the couple arrived in Fuerteventura on March 4. They took a low-cost flight with Eurowings, landing at the island’s airport. Upon their arrival, they opted for a rental car to reach their accommodation — the four-star Innside by Meliá hotel located on Playa de la Barca in the municipality of Pájara. The media outlet Bild noted that the hotel room cost around 160 euros per night and described the weather as ideal, stating, “Fuerteventura, 22 degrees, the sun shines.”

Traveling Like Any Other Tourist

While the price of their stay may initially sound extravagant, Bild highlighted that Merkel’s travel arrangements were quite ordinary compared to her former position. Traveling with a budget airline, she followed the same processes as other passengers. During the flight, she wore a mask, read a book, and even munched on a snack she brought from home. After landing, she disembarked like everyone else, though her security detail escorted her to the aircraft.

Dining and Enjoying Local Culture

Aside from the modest travels, Merkel’s trip was complemented by her excursions around the island. The couple was seen frequenting the hotel restaurant for breakfast, joining other guests as just another pair enjoying their holiday. Interestingly, Merkel, known for her reserved nature, permitted a photograph to be taken at the Ramón restaurant in La Lajita, a locale renowned for its local charm and proximity to Playa de la Barca, celebrated not just for its beautiful scenery but also as a hotspot for surfing and kitesurfing competitions.

Past Encounters with La Gomera

Merkel’s connection to this region is long-standing. Her first visit to La Gomera occurred during her student days in the 1970s when she was studying Physics at the University of Leipzig, embedded in the then Democratic Republic of Germany. Since then, she has returned to the island six times during her tenure as Chancellor, always during the Easter holidays, and with her husband by her side. The media has often depicted those visits as another instance of her attempt to blend in with regular tourists, seeking solace from the public eye.

Seeking Solitude in the Sun

The desire to maintain a low profile persisted during her Fuerteventura getaway as well. Images emerged of Merkel at the hotel, with her security team working discreetly to avoid any fanfare from curious onlookers. Notably, the couple was keen on relishing their time away, which speaks volumes about the need for peace and privacy that often eludes public figures.

A Journey Begin with a Purpose

Merkel’s trip to the Canary Islands reflects more than just a sun-soaked vacation; it signals an interesting juxtaposition between her past responsibilities and her present desire for normalcy. Whether hiking in La Gomera or lounging on the beach in Fuerteventura, she continues to embody the spirit of both a dedicated leader and an individual seeking personal respite in nature.
