Enhancing Fuerteventura’s Road Network: A Commitment to Progress
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is on a transformative journey, significantly improving the island’s road network. With an investment of approximately 16 million euros slated for the years between 2023 and 2026, nearly 90 kilometers of roads are set to undergo rehabilitation. This initiative not only enhances transportation infrastructure but also aims to elevate the quality of life for residents.
Investment and Scope of Improvements
Fuerteventura’s road improvement initiatives encompass around 20% of the island’s entire road network. The enhancements are being executed through specialized contracts for construction as well as comprehensive road maintenance agreements. By focusing on both main arteries and local roadways, the Cabildo is ensuring that the needs of all users are met, bolstering both safety and circulation conditions.
Leadership Commitment to Infrastructure
Lola García, the President of the Cabildo, has been vocal about the importance of these upgrades. She stated, “Improving the island’s roads is a priority because it directly enhances the quality of life of Fuerteventura’s residents.” This sentiment reflects a commitment to adapting infrastructure to match the island’s significant growth in recent years, aiming for modern and secure roadways that align with reality.
Targeted Areas for Rehabilitation
Blas Acosta, the Minister of Roads, noted the progressive renewal of the island’s network, emphasizing that both major communication routes and essential local roads are being addressed. The rehabilitation efforts extend across various municipalities, including Pájara, Tuineje, Antigua, Puerto del Rosario, La Oliva, and Betancuria. Key routes like the FV-2 and several secondary roads are among the top priorities, ensuring that the backbone of transportation is well-maintained.
Ongoing Projects and Current Focus
As of now, several rehabilitation projects are underway in different sections of the island. Noteworthy efforts include the renovation of the FV-20 from the Ampuyenta roundabout to the municipal boundary with Puerto del Rosario, and the FV-30 corridor linking Betancuria with Vega de Río Palmas. Additionally, improvements are being made along the stretch between Pájara’s main thoroughfare and the FV-605 exit.
Specific Interventions Per Municipality
The comprehensive plan ensures that every municipality benefits from the rehabilitation and enhancement of its roads. Key interventions are taking place in:
- Puerto del Rosario: Improvements in areas such as Puerto Lajas, Tetir, and Casillas del Ángel.
- La Oliva: Targeted upgrades in Corralejo, Lajares, and El Cotillo.
- Antigua: Essential renovations in Caleta de Fuste, Triquivijate, and Valles de Ortega.
- Betancuria: Focus on access routes to the town, ensuring better connectivity.
- Tuineje: Road upgrades in Gran Tarajal, Tiscamanita, and Tarajalejo.
- Pájara: Rehabilitation efforts around Costa Calma and the area surrounding FV-605.
