Rehabilitation of the Sports Court in Caleta de Fuste: A Step Toward Urban Renewal
The Ayuntamiento de Antigua has embarked on an exciting project aimed at revitalizing the neglected sports court located next to Caleta Garden in Caleta de Fuste. This initiative is part of a comprehensive action plan that not only focuses on the sports court but also includes improvements to the surrounding streets, namely Juan Ramón Soto Morales and Francisco Urquía.
A Vision for Recovery
According to Mayor Juan Cabrera, the primary goal of this renovation is to reclaim an area that had fallen into disrepair, littered with debris and neglect. The plan proposes temporarily converting this space into parking to alleviate the pressing need for parking in this busy tourist area. “The transformation will offer a much-needed solution for those looking to enjoy the restaurants along the main street,” Cabrera noted.
Cleaning Up the Area
Significant work has already commenced, with teams working diligently to dismantle old walls, remove deteriorating fences, and clear away fallen lamps and scattered refuse. The priority is to create a clean and level plaza that can serve as a functional parking area for both locals and visitors. The mayor shared, “The aim is to leave a space that is not only usable but also aesthetically pleasing.”
Hands-On Approach
A dedicated crew of ten workers is carrying out the rehabilitation efforts, utilizing a tractor and various machinery for the removal of debris and waste. Their hard work underscores the Ayuntamiento’s commitment to improving public spaces, showcasing a proactive approach to urban management.
Additional Urban Improvements
In addition to rehabilitating the sports court, the project extends to renovating pavements and installing new tiles. The intervention will also touch upon the flooring of the Plaza de la Tenencia de Alcaldía in Caleta de Fuste, a step taken even though it is not strictly within municipal jurisdiction. “This is all part of our initiative to beautify the main surroundings of El Castillo,” Cabrera explained.
Enhancing Safety and Cleanliness
An integral part of the plan involves tackling the notorious “black spots” in the locality. This will be achieved through tree pruning, thorough cleaning and disinfecting of pavements to remove stains, and upgrades to urban furniture. Additionally, new lighting installations are planned to enhance safety and visibility. These measures will be complemented by a municipal asphalting plan aimed at improving road conditions.
Strengthening Local Security
Mayor Cabrera also highlighted the enhanced security measures being implemented in Caleta de Fuste. Collaboration among the Policía Canaria, Guardia Civil, and local police is critical, with staggered shifts ensuring a strong presence in the area. “A robust safety plan alone isn’t enough; we need to pair it with modern and refurbished public spaces to genuinely enhance the community’s image and quality,” Cabrera affirmed.

Tourism Councillor Joana Verde has been closely monitoring the progress of these initiatives alongside the mayor, witnessing firsthand the transformation of a previously degraded space. Both leaders share a vision for enhancing the area, turning it into a cleaner and more functional environment for both residents and tourists alike.
