Celebrating the Countercultural Movement

“A Contracultura” is a tribute to the countercultural movement that emerged in Spain during the late 20th century, particularly in the 1980s. This era was marked by significant political and cultural transitions, with artists pushing the boundaries and challenging societal norms through various forms of artistic expression. The exhibition features a diverse range of artwork, including photography, painting, ceramics, and sculpture, providing a rich tapestry that represents the lively spirit of a pivotal time in Spanish history.

Call to Local Artists

In preparation for the exhibition, the Ciudad de Puerto del Rosario has extended an invitation to local artists residing in the Canary Islands to submit their artworks for inclusion. The call for submissions will remain open until August 26th, providing artists the opportunity to showcase their talents. All submitted artwork will be returned to the artists after the exhibition unless they opt to authorize sales. So far, over ten distinct pieces have already been submitted, hinting at a diverse collection on display.

As part of their submission, artists are required to provide a brief description of their work, including the title, the artist’s name, and a succinct explanation, ensuring that viewers can connect with the artistry on a deeper level.

Perspectives from Local Leaders

The exhibition has garnered support and enthusiasm from local government officials. Mayor David de Vera expressed his excitement about the event, stating, “This is a great opportunity to enjoy the various artworks that will be displayed, showcasing a golden age of artistic culture from a generation that significantly shaped our artistic landscape.” His remarks highlight the importance of cultural initiatives in fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of local art history.

Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Verdugo, the Councillor for Culture, has actively encouraged artists to participate. He noted, “This initiative has yielded impressive results in previous editions, and it’s a fantastic platform to exhibit the talents of artists across diverse disciplines such as photography, painting, ceramics, and sculpture.” His call to action underscores the community’s commitment to celebrating local artistry.
