The Role of Content Creators in Shaping Political Discourse in Spain

The latest survey from Spain’s Center for Sociological Research (CIS) reveals a striking trend: over the past two years, 30.4% of Spaniards have turned to the internet and social media as their primary sources for shaping political opinions and decisions. This figure surpasses traditional media outlets like television (28.8%) and the influence of political candidates themselves (23.6%). As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this shift are profound, particularly in a world grappling with complex issues such as the invasion of Iran and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Influence of Social Media

In today’s turbulent climate, the debate surrounding the responsibility of content creators—many of whom have amassed significant followings—has intensified. Should these influencers take a stand on pressing social issues? The opinions are varied, reflecting the complexity of the digital age.

Paloma Miranda, CEO of Grupo GO, emphasizes that content creators are individuals with values and responsibilities. “If their personal brand is built on authenticity, it’s logical that they feel the need to take a stand at certain times,” she explains. However, she also acknowledges that not all creators have the same relationship with their audience. For instance, an entertainment-focused influencer may not feel obligated to comment on every social issue.

The Spectrum of Opinions

Lola Lolita, a prominent TikTok figure, echoes this sentiment. When asked about her stance on social media activism, she stated, “I don’t. But I think it’s always good to have profiles that can raise awareness and amplify voices.” This highlights a growing recognition that while some influencers may choose to remain silent, others can play a vital role in advocating for change.

The Dilemma of Public Opinion

Unlike anonymous users, content creators wield a powerful voice that can shape public opinion. Their words resonate with thousands, if not millions, of followers. However, many influencers hesitate to express their views on complex topics, fearing backlash or ridicule. Miranda notes, “Not everyone feels sufficiently informed or comfortable speaking about international politics or human rights in public, and I think that’s okay.”

Elba Saavedra, an influencer marketing specialist, points out another challenge: the pressure to comment on every issue, often without adequate knowledge. “The immediacy of the online format forces people to express opinions without sufficient context,” she warns. This environment can lead to the spread of misinformation and oversimplified narratives.

The Fear Factor

The fear of public ridicule looms large for many influencers. Saavedra argues that even when the cause is noble, the potential for negative feedback can deter creators from speaking out. “There will always be someone willing to disrespect your point of view,” she says. This fear can lead to self-censorship, where creators feel compelled to measure their words carefully to avoid backlash.

The Complexity of Taking a Stand

Rocío Centeno, a content strategist, raises an important question: “What do we mean by taking a stand?” She suggests that simply posting a story condemning an issue may not be enough if it doesn’t align with a creator’s overall message. The community must develop a critical sense to differentiate between genuine advocacy and opportunistic gestures.

Erea Louro, a stylist and content creator, argues against the notion that influencers should remain neutral. “Sticking to a planned posting schedule when a major event has unfolded is difficult to comprehend,” she states. Just as brands adapt their messaging to current events, so too should content creators consider their role in the conversation.

Navigating Brand Collaborations

The stakes are high for influencers when it comes to brand collaborations. Many brands prefer to associate with “neutral” profiles to avoid controversy. Centeno notes that companies often hesitate to partner with individuals who have strong opinions. However, she also observes a shift in this mindset, with more brands seeking creators whose values align with their own.

Paloma Miranda agrees, suggesting that brands are increasingly looking for creators with clear positions on issues like environmentalism and diversity. Yet, the fear of losing collaborations remains a significant concern for many influencers. Gonzalo Muiño, a content creator, acknowledges the dilemma: “We all have to eat, but we also have to be aware of where the money we’re paid comes from.”

The Consequences of Silence

Staying silent on pressing issues can also carry its own consequences. Muiño argues that whether one speaks out or remains silent, the choice itself is a political stance. “What will future generations think of you when they see that you did nothing in the face of injustice?” he asks, highlighting the moral implications of inaction.

Erea Louro shares her experience of receiving warnings from brands about discussing feminist issues, illustrating the tension between advocacy and commercial interests. “I found it curious that the warning was related to a product whose values were close to feminism,” she reflects.

The Future of Content Creation

As the conversation around political positioning on social media continues to evolve, it’s clear that the role of content creators is becoming increasingly complex. The balance between personal values, audience expectations, and brand collaborations is delicate. Influencers must navigate this landscape with care, weighing the risks of speaking out against the potential for silence to be interpreted as complicity.

In a world where social media shapes political discourse, the responsibility of content creators is more significant than ever. Their voices can inspire change, but they also face the daunting challenge of managing public perception in an increasingly polarized environment.
