The III Concurso Regional de Debate Insular: A Platform for Young Voices
On March 21, at 11:15 AM, the historic Parliament of the Canary Islands will host the final round of the III Regional School Debate Competition. This prestigious event promises to gather the best debate teams from each island, showcasing the talents of young individuals from a variety of educational settings. The competition has seen a remarkable turnout, with a total of twenty-two educational institutions participating across the Canaries.
Participating Schools and Teams
This year’s competition features teams from seven key islands: Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Each island has sent its strongest team to compete in the final. For instance, the IES Jandía is representing Fuerteventura, while Gran Canaria’s representative is the CPEIPS Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. The remaining teams hail from notable institutions such as IES Las Maretas (Lanzarote), IES Ichasagua (Tenerife), IES Luis Cobiella Cuevas (La Palma), CEO Santiago Apóstol (La Gomera), and IES Garoé (El Hierro).
The Core Debate Topic
Each participating team consists of students from the third and fourth years of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). Teams are tasked with engaging in a rigorous dialogue around the pressing theme of globalization’s impact on contemporary youth. Specifically, they must explore the advantages and disadvantages of living in a global village, providing thorough research and articulate arguments both in favor of and against differing perspectives. This topic is particularly relevant in today’s interconnected world, making the debates not just an academic exercise but a real engagement with current societal issues.
Jury Composition
The competition will also be judged by a distinguished panel consisting of representatives from various parliamentary groups. Key figures include David Cabrera (Grupo Nacionalista), María Victoria Hernández (Grupo Socialista Canario), and Lorena Hernández (Grupo Popular), among others. The jury will be presided over by Soledad Monzón, the Minister of Education and Universities in the Canary Islands, which adds a layer of importance to the proceedings.
Structure of the Competition
Before reaching this regional final, teams have already endured a rigorous competition process, consisting of island-level rounds. Each island’s competition took place during the week leading up to the final, where one team emerged victorious from each island. These seven teams will now have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on a central stage at the Parliament, engaging in high-stakes dialogue and presenting well-researched arguments.
Team Preparation and Support
Each debate team is composed of six members, one of whom serves as an alternate. To ensure that students deliver impactful performances, each team is guided by a responsible educator from their school, along with possible support from collaborating teachers. This mentorship allows students not only to hone their debate skills but also to develop their critical thinking and teamwork abilities.
Broader Participation Across the Canaries
This year, participation has expanded significantly, with twenty-three schools across all the major islands partaking in the initial rounds. Schools from diverse educational backgrounds such as the IES César Manrique and IES Tinajo in Lanzarote, IES Gran Tarajal, and IES Jandía in Fuerteventura, as well as institutions from La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria, have all showcased their dedication to academic excellence through debate.
The enthusiasm and commitment seen this year reflect the growing importance of debate as not only an educational tool but also a means of empowering the youth to engage actively in discussions about crucial societal issues. As they take the stage, these young debaters will embody the spirit of inquiry and dialogue, essential for shaping the future of their communities.
With anticipation building, the final at the Parliament of the Canary Islands is set to be an inspiring showcase of talent, intellect, and youthful passion. Stay tuned as these students take on the challenge of debating globalization, a topic that resonates deeply across generations.
