The Struggle of La Lapa Majorera: Conservation Challenges and Future Prospects

La lapa majorera (Patella candei) is a unique marine species that has unfortunately witnessed a significant decline in its numbers across the beautiful Canary Islands. Specifically, this mollusk has vanished from the islands of Lobos and the northern and eastern coasts of Fuerteventura. Current studies by the University of La Laguna indicate that its remaining population is now confined to a relic habitat located in southern Jandía.

Recent Findings

In 2022, researchers conducted thorough sampling across 23 sites in Fuerteventura and Lobos, revealing a concerning finding: only 53 individuals of la lapa majorera remain, all located in the Jandía area. While this figure represents an increase from earlier records, it’s important to note that the species has considerably contracted its range since 2003. The average density recorded was merely 15 individuals per 100 square meters, a level inadequate for ensuring successful reproduction.

Reproductive Challenges

La lapa majorera has an external fertilization method, which poses significant challenges for the continuation of the species. The success of reproduction hinges on having a high concentration of adult individuals close to one another. The sizes of the examined specimens ranged between 20 and 65 millimeters, notably lacking the larger individuals previously observed in earlier studies. This absence raises concerns about the long-term viability of the population.

Conservation Efforts and Regulatory Measures

To combat the decline of la lapa majorera, the extraction of this species has been prohibited year-round since 2004. Furthermore, a recovery plan approved in 2015 has introduced critical habitats and monitoring protocols along with additional restrictions. Yet, despite these proactive measures, the mollusk has disappeared from much of its historic coastal environment, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing conservation strategies.

Threats to Survival

Multiple factors have been identified as potential threats to the survival of la lapa majorera. Illegal or accidental collection, habitat degradation, and rising temperatures from climate change all pose significant risks. The research notes a discernible warming trend, although establishing a clear causal relationship with the species’ decline remains challenging. The call for specific thermal tolerance studies is a crucial step if we are to understand and mitigate these threats.

Jandía: A Last Refuge

Interestingly, Jandía has shown some resilience as a refuge for la lapa majorera. This could be attributed to its exposure to strong ocean waves, which complicates access for potential collectors. Additionally, some specimens were found at lower intertidal levels, where they may enjoy some protection from extreme temperatures during low tide.

Exploring Cultivation and Reintroduction

Given the troubling lack of recovery, the University of La Laguna is considering innovative approaches such as laboratory cultivation and potential reintroduction of la lapa majorera. The proposed method involves obtaining juveniles from the adult population in Jandía and transferring them to other suitable habitats in Fuerteventura. However, before this can occur, genetic analyses and non-invasive techniques must be conducted to ensure compatibility.

Genetic Distinction and Future Protocols

An important consideration in the reintroduction plans is the genetic distinction between populations. It is not advisable to utilize specimens from the Salvaje Islands due to notable genetic differences. Thus, the focus remains on developing protocols specific to the needs of la lapa majorera, covering aspects of reproduction, larval culture, fixation, juvenile production, and their eventual release into appropriate environments.


La lapa majorera stands at a critical juncture, facing unprecedented challenges yet embodying hope driven by scientific inquiry and conservation innovation. The steps taken today may determine the future of this unique marine inhabitant of the Canary Islands.
